Engine coolant sensor

Several years ago I replaced my engine coolant sensor which was a pretty simple and easy process. Couple years later I had some work done and afterwards noticed very hard starts at times especially after it's been sitting a while. I took it to auto zone and had code checked and it said P0118 which is the sensor. I popped the hood to find its in there but not plugged in and I can't find the harness anywhere. Can anyone tell me where to look or where it goes to? Doing research it says that a faulty one can cause issues starting the vehicle. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forum

Depending on the year and engine model there are usually TWO temp units
ECT sensor has 2 wires and is 5volt, only used by the computer, if not working can cause hard starts
Coolant temp sender is 12volt, and only used by the dash board gauge, can be 1 wire pre-1998 or 2 wires in later years, can't cause engine issues

So what year is your Ranger and what engine do you have?

It's a 2005, ford ranger edge. The sensor plug is missing after having work done and I am trying to find out where if leads to so I can find it to plug it in

2005 Ranger had 3 engine options, 3.0l or 4.0l engine, they are at different places, but near the same place
2.3l didn't have an ECT sensor, had CHT instead

Usually the ECT will be at top front of the engine, on or near thermostat housing, so its connector wires will be part of the fuel injection harness that runs around the upper intake manifold, so the missing connector could be tucked away under the throttle body, the main harness usually runs down the drivers side of upper intake then under the throttle body to the passenger side

What work was done on the engine?

multiple things were done but the main thing was a cylinder head was replaced. Good info so far you have given me I'm going to go pull the throttle body housing now

Deleted that "VanityCover" over the ThrottleBody on my V6~4.0~SOHC several years ago;
seems to serve no practical purpose & gets in the way of putting an eye on things that need routine inspection.
