Engine won't turnover

I have a 2003 ranger 4.0L 4x4. The engine won't start and the check engine light came on. I plugged in my code reader and it says there are 0 codes, and the EVAP system is incomplete. Do you have any ideas of what it might be?

"Engine won't turnover" means starter motor is not working is that correct?
Could be starter motor is bad

Not cranking could also be the anti-theft PATS system if so equipped.

There is also a Neutral Safety Switch(NSS) on automatics, so trans has to be in Park or Neutral for starter motor to turn, it is on the transmission above shift linkage.

On manuals they use a Clutch switch, clutch must be in for starter to turn, it is on the master cylinder push rob shaft.

Either one of these can come unhooked or break.

Check engine light comes on with the key so I assume you mean it came on after going off the first time?

Engine cranks but won't start??

An engine needs gas, spark and compression to start up.

We will assume timing chain didn't break, because you said engine cranks, it wouldn't if a piston hit an open valve, so we will assume 150psi of compression.

Fuel and spark, well I guess the easiest thing to do would be to get some Starting Fluid(ether in a spray can) at the auto parts store, and spray some into the engine and see if it fires up.
You can remove a larger vacuum line like the PCV hose or Power brake hose, spray fluid into intake then replace hose.

Crank engine:
If it fires up then dies, you have no gas getting to the engine.
If it doesn't fire up then you have no spark.
