plugs, plug wires, fuel filter, etc. are just a list of basic maintenance that would cause thiss, but as previously said getting a code pulled and posting the #'s on here will be a much quicker way of solving the problem.

I had a similar problem and it was the ignition coil.. easy fix..

though if your a 2001 you have the 2.5L so you have 2 coils..

check your intake valve! i had mine put on a big expensive scanner and it said my intake valve was sticking shut or open! Im getting ready to put mine in the shop to have the valve cleaned off! They say the carbon builds up around the intake valve opening and causes it to stick shut or open! Sounds reasonable to me . Mine jerks and gives out at the beginning of shifting , once I accelerate it goes away until I release the gas pedal again, when only a little gas pedal is pushed it does it.

I have a Ford ranger 2.3 5 speed. On the back of the engine at the top, right at the back of the intake, verily visible is a main vacuum line coming from intake to the pvc valve ,mine was sucking flat, causing the intake to get no air. Check to see if yours feels really soft and mooshy if so it's probably sucking flat when the vacuum builds. I got a new hose and mine runs great now
