Finally forund out my idle problem..TB

ok so today after school we put my friends throttle body on my truck. he has a 1998 ranger so it was all the same. well after putting his on my truck ran perfectly and idled at 800 instead of 1500. i started looking around and my throttle body has like a little gap around the butterfly on the sides. his doesnt. also i can grab my butterfly assembly and move it in and out a little...(like i grab the thing that the throttle cable hooks on and i can move it in and out a little) and when i pull/ push it in the right direction the idle drops. so im getting too much air through the TB...can i replace just the butterfly and assembly or do i have to buy a whole new TB. also is that adjustable or what. any idea on what i should do? also im getting like this brown liquid on the outer side of the butterfly and it kinda has a gas smell. im thinking its coming from the blow off valve on the valve cover. can i just plug that on both ends and not run that little tube thing? thanks for any help

best bet is to get a new one rather than risking taking one apart. There should be an idle screw somer were on there but if you get a new one i wouldnt worry a whole lot.

ya i know..but i think that 1998 3.0's are the only trucks with this exact TB...and there is none of those in hte JY here...

Sounds like a worn out throttle shaft.

If Downey doesn't get one I'm hitting the J/Y's out here Friday.

cool guys thanks...any one know if i can plug that vent tube going from the valve cover to the intake tube?

t5cents 04-17-2010 04:38 PM

any one know about that tube...also i think i found a permanent fix to this...instead of getting a new throttle body since this one is worn out on the sides....today i took a small nut and bot and put it through the small hole on the butterfly where the air goes through at idle...i had to turn my adjuster up a lot to compensate for the lost air flow....but now i can adjust the idle with that screw any where from about 300-400 to like 2000. so now it idles where i want it and i have the iac plugged back in and every thing works fine....but since i dont want that nut coming loose and going in my motor i pulled it out and filled the hole with silicone. im letting it dry for the whole 24hrs it says it needs to cure that way it is as strong as possible when i start it for the first time after putting it in there. at least if it does suck this through it will most likely just blow through the motor and not hurt any thing. and if it does than ill do it again but with some good epoxy. that should hold.

i didnt find you one man i didnt even see a 3.0 truck

t5cents 04-17-2010 05:59 PM

ya for some reason the 3.0's are rare to find in the JY's here too.....witch is weird cause 4 of the 5 people i know with rangers here have 3.0's

well the silicone appears to be holding...we'll see how it does in the long run...
