fuel filter replacement
 

Hey,
i picked up a new fuel filter and have been meaning to put it in. Ford recommends not reusing the clips. Is this necessary, if so where can i pick them up. Secondly how do the clips work. I want to make sure i know what im doing before i end up stuck halfway through the project.

I reused mine with no problems.. :confused:

buy the tool from the auto parts store cost like 3 bucks

it slips between the the fitting and the clip and off she comes

but dont break the fuel connections or you in for a expensive repair
fords fuel lines are about 250 bucks to replace

X2 D did mine today... what a b*tch!

i did not need the tool,I use a pair of needle nose pliers to press in the button and slide it off.

Its a pain in the arse. I would suggest staying AWAY FROM AUTOZONE if your going to buy a ' fuel filter tool '. They don't fit.

has anyone found replacement clips if you DO break them?

thats what it looked like to me. The chilton manual said that ford reccomends to not reuse the clips and to check if they come with the replacement filter. which they dont. Also is it necessary to elevate the front end of the truck or relieve the pressure in the fuel lines?

No, you do not have to elevate the truck... We (D and I) unhooked the emergency cut off that was located on the passenger side of my truck... tried to start it a couple of times (knowing that it would not start)... and there was no pressure in the lines..

From my examining them.. I don't/didn't see any way to replace them. They are like an offset O-ring but made of a hard plastic, nor a rubberish material you can bend to put back into the line.

If you break them, your looking at replacing the line.. Thus why I bought a tool.. which was a piece of garbage and required modification 3 times till it finally worked.

Just asking, bc when I did mine, I messed the clips up a little. Nothing serious, but not "new" looking, and if there is a cheap replacement, I'm replacing them.

They really are easy to remove. Relieve the fuel pressure, run it out of gas, pull the fuel pump fuse/relay, or bleed it from the valve on the injector rail. Little wd-40/silicone on the connections. Push in a little on the fittings (into the filter), Squeeze the tab (2 of mine popped off with my hand, one with pliers) and wiggle it off.

I just used my fingers and a small pocket screwdriver my mechanic gave me to help press the tabs in while pushing the line towards the filter, then pulling off.

Alas, this is why my fuel filter has been sitting in my closet for a year. I can't get the old one off.

The tool won't be small enought to get between the filter and the outlet hose, there just isn't enought room.

I just replaced my fuel filter a couple of days ago. All I did to relieve the pressure was disconnect the fuel inertia switch that is located on the floor of the passenger side. Let it turn over a few times to get as much fuel out of the lines as possible. Made sure the gas cap was off too. I have a green clip on the one line and white clips on the other two. The white clips were very easy. They just pull off. The green clip I just squeezed in on while pulling the line away from the filter. The green clip doesn't come out. It loosens its hold on the filter when you squeeze in on it. Snaps back into place when you connect the line to the new filter. I didn't need a tool for any of this. Just a pair of pliers to squeeze in on the green clip. Most filters don't come with new clips. I just reused the old ones. I think the Wix filters and maybe a couple of other brands come with clips. I got a purolator filter and it was just the filter itself.

Exactley how I did it. I did pull the fuel pump fuse and let it run until it died, then tryed to crank it for just a sec to make sure. However, fuel still came gushing out anyways. I should have also tryed to releave some at the valve on the fuel rail. Just make sure your face is out of the way when pulling the lines off...
