it means you have a bad fuel sender - I have the same problem from time to time on my 2004, with 37,000 miles. The resistor that senses the fuel level is on a lever and the resistance isnt reading right. If its like my truck it happens when you fill up for maybe a minute but after you put about 5 or 10 miles on the tank. Mine dosent do it every time. Mostly it only happens to me in colder weather, never seen it happen during the summer. If you change the sender you can fix it, but you have to drop the tank.

I have heard from reliable sources that overfilling the tank can put stress on the float and make this go bad. I used to really fill my tank up (thats bad), so now I stop at the first click and it hasn't happened lately. I'm going to be putting a high volume fuel pump in soon so I'll just fix it then.

There is no "Check Fuel" light on a 98 Ranger. You have either a Check Engine, Check Gage or Fuel Reset light. Which one is it?

Check Gage will come on for low fuel level but it also comes on for high coolant temperature or low oil pressure. If that's the one you're getting, watch all three gauges for symptoms while the Check Gage light is on.

"Check Gage or Fuel Reset light. Which one is it?"
check gage and check fuel light the same thing you know what i mean.

it is has nothing to do with any other systems in the truck. all the other gauges are normal.

so it must deal with the sending unit because this last last time i filled the tank pretty good.

"you can fix it"
can you take sending unit out of a 3.0 and how much is a new one

can it be something else.

Listen to Bob, he knows all...

The check gage light is for low fuel, high coolant temp and low oil pressure.

the "Fuel Reset" light is totally different and i am not quite sure when that one comes on, im sure Bob knows, he invented the fuel reset light

LOL.....Bob is the king.

As for the "Fuel Reset" light, leave your gas cap off and drive around......it'll come on.

You can probably take the bed off to fix it too, which is much easier than dropping the tank.

I am not saying that light does not control those other functions. I am just saying that if there was something wrong those other functions. There would also sign in the gauges them selves.

Fuel sending unit it must be

Could that light also show that there might be a fuel leak?

There are too many opportunities to damage the paint or body doing what you say.
