Fuel overflow before gas is filled

Hey guys, I'm having a problem pumping fuel on my 2001 2wd XL 2.3l. I went to the station with a quarter tank till empty, and the fuel overflowed after just 2 gallons. The auto shutoff happened after fuel had been dumped on the ground. It overfilled from the top of the filler neck, not out of any connection under the bed. I recently bought this truck so it was the first time I've filled it. The fuel gauge did go up slightly after I filled it, so I don't think the gauge is broken.

My thought was that the filler neck must be clogged. I ordered a new one, but realized the two flexible tubes that connect the gas tank to the metal filler neck weren't included. I'm guessing those are the two tubes that actually need to be replaced, they look pretty worn and old, and the truck has 250k miles on it. I haven't been able to find them anywhere online. Does anyone know where I could get them from? Rock auto seems to have the one big tube, but I can't find the smaller one (important for auto shutoff I'm guessing?) anywhere. Could I go to the auto parts store and buy a generic tube of the right length and size and fit it on? Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Or if you think there might be another issue, I'd love to hear what you think. Thanks for any help!

Rangers used two types of filler tubes, and different lengths for regular bed and step side bed, so heads up on that part

One type has 2 hoses, like this: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/..._AC_SX355_.jpg
The smaller hose is the VENT hose it lets the air out while refilling the tank, if its clogged then you will get same backup in the filler as a clogged filler tube

Other type has a tube within a tube, like this: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/..._AC_SY355_.jpg
The smaller inside hose is the filler, gas goes in, the larger outside hose is the VENT, lets the air out

The VENT where the air comes out is around the edge of the filler hole where pump nozzle goes in
You should be able to feel the air coming out of the VENT hole or holes as the gas goes in
VENT and filler are both sealed when gas cap is on

Mine has the first type of hose you linked. That's the part I already have new. I'm wondering where I can find the two rubber hoses that connect that part to the gas tank. Will generic hoses cut to length work for those?

Yes, most "rubber" hoses are gasoline/ethanol approved, and there is no high pressure, so you can buy hose by the foot

The smaller VENT hose may have a valve it connects to at the top of the tank, like a float valve

I finally got around to taking the filler and vent hoses off. Can anyone tell me what this part is sitting inside the gas tank after the filler neck? It looks like some type of filter. Could this be clogged and causing my fuel tank to overflow when I put gas in?

Update: It looks like this might be an anti-siphon device? I can't find any replacements or part numbers for it anywhere, or a way to get it unstuck

I haven't tried filling up yet since replacing everything, but I'm gonna try soon and I'll let you know how it goes. My guess is that the fuel at Exxon was pumping so fast that it just couldn't all drain into the tank fast enough. I took out the fuel pump to make sure I was actually at a quarter tank (and it was) and was able to look inside and this is what was between the fuel tank and the filler neck, viewed from inside the fuel tank. Didn't looked clogged or anything, and neither did the filler neck or the filler tubes.

I refilled with fuel yesterday. The auto shut off didn't happen, so I still overflowed from the filler, but it filled up all the way. The replacement vent hose I used was a bit bigger than the old one, so maybe it didn't make enough back pressure to auto shut off.

I would say that would have been a fault in the nozzle not in your Ranger

Nozzles have a small "air" pipe(called Venturi tube), that will cause nozzle to shut off if air flow stops, i.e. it gets gas in it
