Bigger Gas Tank

Bigger Gas Tank
Ok so if you drive a ranger like mine you probably have a tank that holds 16.5 to 20 gal of gas. This along with Google saying that a brand new 2002 ford ranger gets up to 24 city / 28 highway mpg.(I know this is not true for mine, mine more likely gets 14-19 mpg) I want a bigger gas tank and would rather go to the scrapyard and cut one off of an older car than buy a new one. Has anyone ever swapped gas tanks with another ford brand car or any car for that matter?

One of the reasons you don't see Dual Tanks on trucks anymore is the EVAP system cost per gas tank.
EVAP(Evaporative Emission Control) creates a slight negative pressure in a fuel tank so gas fumes don't pollute the air.
Working EVAP system causes the "whooshing" noise when you open the gas tank to fill up.
If your area has emissions testing then working EVAP system is required, and even if you don't have the testing, the Check Engine Light(CEL) will be on all the time if EVAP system isn't working
Installing a larger gas tank has the same restrictions, working EVAP system is needed.
In a Ranger there is no room for a larger tank at the location it is in now, at least not one that is large enough to warrant the expense.
Some have installed a Bronco II 23gal tank where the spare tire is, but not sure of fitment on 2002, and really not much extra fuel unless it was used as an auxiliary tank.
In the bed fuel cells are more common, but you lose bed space.

Something I like to do is carry a Jerry can with me on long trips, a six gallon. I got a metal one at harbor freight for 30 bucks on sale. You can get a couple plastic ones if you want. However again you lose bed space with these and they're quite obvious and possibly a target for thieves.

Thanks guys, so what i am hearing is the most possible thing to do is put one where i currently have a trailer hitch and spare tire. I am really not willing to give that up. But the bed fuel tank kind of sounds appealing. What type of tank would i even use, is there a aftermarket tank made to fit my bed or a something else.

Might want to check local laws too if you're wanting to carry too much in the bed. Florida, IIRC, limits you to 110gallons of fuel in the bed of any vehicle without having a hazmat endorsement on your liscense. Not that 100+gallons of fuel in a ranger is a very good idea in the first place.

Something I think you should know about, even though I had suggested the very opposite earlier to which I apologize for, but there's a certain law, to where fuel is only to be dispensed into proper containers, ones specifically designed for fuel and authorized by (I believe) the DOT. Unless yours are very well hidden with no dead-giveaways, you might find yourself with a nice ticket. Would suck to get landed with a fine after all your hard work.
Something else, a homemade fuel canister of any description will never be quite as safe as one thought out and designed by, well, designers who do this type of thing for a living. Food for thought.
