Fuel Tank Capacity

Hi guys,

So I've been trying to figure out what size gas tank is in my Ranger. It's a 1999 Ranger 3.0 XLT with the 4 speed automatic transmission and off-road package. It has the 4.10 rear end, half door extended cab and has the flareside styling. Is the tank the 16.5 gallon size or the 19.5 gallon size?

I haven't driven below a quarter tank since February, as the fuel gauge read a quarter tank but one day it would not start until I added a gallon of gas. It took a bit past 14 gallons at the station to fill so I assumed it's the 16.5 gallon tank due to the step sides, and the level sending unit is old, not unexpected for a 257k mi truck. I figured out in the meantime that the fuel filter was bad and that's what killed the flow that day. Today, I put 15 gallons in, the low fuel light never came on, and the tank read a quarter tank. If the level reader is still somewhat accurate, this implies it's the 20 gallon model. Anybody else have any experience driving on fumes in this style of truck?

Thanks in advance!
