Gas cap gets stuck
Just bought the Ranger the other day and filled the gas tank before driving home. When I put the gas cap back on I noticed that it didn't click in properly and then was a pain trying to get it off again.
This a sign of needing to replace the gas cap or a sign that the filler neck needs replacing? Not at home just now so can't get out to the truck to look into this. Thanks and apologies for the daft questions, there'll be a ton more coming I'm guessing!!! |
Replace gas cap
It should ratchet, click, when tight enough, reads like its getting over-tightened You don't mention the year but I think that would apply to any year Ranger |
Sorry, the Ranger is a 2000 2wd XLT if that makes any difference. Will see about replacing the gas cap when I have a chance. Hoping that's all it is!

Sorry to bump an old thread, but we just replaced the cap on our 00 Ranger XLT and it had a similar situation. It's the 3-slot style gas cap, right? Well, something (I'm saying rust, but maybe it was abuse) caused the filler's female opening to be out-of-round, and if you manage to get the cap fully inserted, you will probably not be able to turn it. If you do, you will probably not be able to pull it out. If your new cap took any effort to get seated, don't tighten! The filler neck is plenty rusty under the bed, so that's the next thing to replace.
