Fuel gauge isnt working. Is there a relay or hidden fuse someplace? Ive checked the fuses and wires from the tank to the engine.

 

Is it saying full or empty? Floater might be stuck or something not electrical.

 

I had a 97 ranger where I had to replace the sink with a new float, gauge read empty all the time. I went to a dealer to get the float, told the guy at the parts counter what I needed and he reached a foot to the left of the window and handed me one. I figured it must be a common problem because they kept that part in easy reach. was easier for me to hoist the bed off than to drop the tank

 

Reads empty. Before it completly went to junk it would read fine and then the next time I started it it would read empty. filled it up once and it came up and then went right back to empty and hasnt moved since. Is there any way to check the float to see if its messed up?

 

If the wire is chafed and touching the body it will read empty.

You can test your truck by using a 150 ohm resistor between yellow/white wire and ground.

You can find this at the tank or under truck along the driver side frame rail near the seat.

I know this should work for 95 up. Im not sure about what year you have.

 

Thanks. Ive checked the wires and nothing seems to be wrong with them. Im thinkin I will just have to make sure to put gas in it when I think about until I get a feul cell. LOL!

 

My problem started with fresh fuel smell coming from under the truck bed. It ended up being a rusted fuel line tube where the pump/sending unit exits the tank (under the truck bed). I lifted the bed up to get to it so I could run the vehicle as I looked for the fuel smell source. I lifted it up on wood blocks about 12" high, allowing me to slide the bed back 18-20" to get to the fuel tank pump/sending unit. Well, when I replaced the unit, I noticed two of the 3 pins of the electrical connector had corrosion (even with the gel it was coated with). Maybe yours is a wire corrosion problem.

 

Nope. Chekced the wires and connections. Lucky for me my fuel tank is sitting in my bed so its easy to get at everything.

 

I just found and fixed my problem I had with my fuel gauge not working. Turned out to be my float. The float had gotten some gas inside of it and was weighing it down making my gas gauge read empty. It was weird because it DOES float in water but will not in gas. I figured that out with my fishin line, lol. Anyways, I called up my local Ford Dealer and they had them in stock and were only $7 for one of them. Totally fixed my problem. Maybe your issue might be the same.
Take your fuel pump/sending unit out and pull the float (looks like a mini alluminum keg) off of the arm and shake it around. If it has liquid in it, replace it cause thats your problem. If not, The problem lies in your sending unit if it isnt any fuses/harness'. Also might want to check your gauge (pull the plastic off your gauge cluster and very gently move your gas gauge. Then turn the key to the truck and if it moves back to empty, the gauge is good. Investigate Sending unit).

sounds good. Ill give that a shot today if the weather clears up! I know the gauge moves cause ive disconnected the wires and turned the key and it will go way past full. Thanks!! Ill post results

 

Its been a few since I started this thread, finally got around to pulling the fuel asembly thingy out and messed with the float. Didnt take it off and shake it to see if its got fluid in it. But I did pull it out and connect everything back up to it and whie it was out I raised the float up and the gauge read full, put it kinda in the middle and it read about half a tank. But when I put it back in it reads empty. So Im guessing that its got fluid in the float and its causing it to sink. Keepin my fingers crossed that its the problem. Im gonna see about pulling it out and checkin for sure tomorrow. Ive just been puttin 5 or 10 bucks in it everytime I have it or think about it just to be safe. Thanks for the help!!

 

Well it was fuel in the float. Found a smaller then a pin hole hole in it. Went to Autozone and they dont sell them seperate. Just gonna have to try the dealership and hope they have them. THanks again everyone for the help!

 

Good job, had the samee prob once with my Mustang's carb float.
