Gem module question

Does anyone know, for sure, if the GEM module is vehicle specific, i.e., designed specifically for the vehicle in which it's installed; or if the GEM module is made specifically for one type of vehicle, i.e., 4X4, 4X2, 3.0, 4.0, or any other variation of Rangers/Explorers? My question deals with having to buy a GEM module for my 98 Ranger with a 2003 SOHC engine just installed. The 2003 engine is equipped with the PATs system and while I have the key and the PATs transciever module installed in the '98 steering column, that transciever has a 4 prong harness which needs to be hooked up somewhere. Since the '98 did not have the PATs system, what year/type GEM module needs to be installed? So far, the internet has not produced an answer; perhaps one of you knows.

I wish i could help you, i just had problems with my GEM/ t-case, the whole works, said to hell with it and am going straight axel. :surrender I know when you buy a GEM it has to be programmed to what year ranger you have. I would assume that has everything to do with the year of the motor. ????????????? But don't quote me on that..

On the GEM there is a tag that says 2wd or 4wd but nothing about engine size. I have to assume you installed the 2003 ECM. I know there are year changes to the pats system from 2000- 2001 and that it comunicates with all the computers after 01. You will probably need the remote anti theft module and a air bag module for the 03(eventually-to get the light to go out)and you are probably looking at a harness change behind the dash and under the hood. Of course this is speculation and I might be way off.

The GEM has nothing to do with PATS. For 2003, the transceiver talks directly to the PCM. You really need a factory Wiring Manual for a 2003 Ranger.

Rwenzing is right; the transciever is wired directly to the PCM and OK's start of the engine once the ignition key gives off the correct code. Of the four wires mentioned in the first post, one is a ground, one is wired to ignition "hot", and two go directly to the PCM, information courtesy of the local Ford dealer. The GEM module has nothing to do with the PATs system (at least in the 2003). As an added note, the engine was bought with the 2003 PCM, the 2003 steering column and key, and the engine had all its wiring attached.
