Headlights went out!

Hey everyone,

A lady I work with has a 98 XLT manual supercab with about 60K on it. That is all I know. Well she said she was driving last night and her headlights went off for about 5 seconds and just came back on. I asked her if her dash lights went off also but she said she didn't know because by the time she noticed the lights were off and looked down the dash and headlights were back on.

Has anyone run into this before or know what I could look for on her truck. It happened only once last night so I am not sure if is a fluke thing or if it will happen to her again. I might add it was pretty cold here in WI so I don't know if that had anything to do with it either? Kind of a dangerous thing to have happening!!

Thanks for any help!!

That's all I could think of that would have caused that. Ask her to check her fuse box to see if any fuses blew.

That is what I figured too. Hopefully it was a one time thing with the cold weather and all. How do you take it in for service if it only happened once so far and it works fine now. I will have to talk to her tomorrow to see if it happens to her again tonight because it is like 0 here with the wind chill.

If it was a short to ground, then the fuse would have melted and the lights wouldn't have come back on. Sounds more like an intermittent open circuit.

I would turn on the headlights and try wiggling the Multifunction Switch (stalk lever on LH side of column) to see if the problem can be reproduced.

When I first got my ranger, and had the lights on, one of corner lenses with the orange bulb in it (right beside the headlight, not the blinker lense) wasn't working, so I gave it a good tap, and it came back on, and it did it again a little later, but havent had any trouble with it in a couple months, so I dont know.

Maybe?

I am going to make sure the flux capacitor is running right tomorrow when I see her and double check the muffler bearings!

Truthfully though, I will try the multifunction switch tomorrow. The only weird thing is that it soundled like she was on the highway which is relatively smooth.

Thanks for all the help!
