2.3 or 2.5 ?

Hey guys , I just picked up a 03 ford ranger . I am loving it .
I drove all over the state the other day and still have half a tank left .
hehe

but it does feel pretty slow , like , I am holding up traffic slow.

Anyway . this truck supposedly has a swapped engine in it .
So the body is a 2003 with a 2001 ranger motor ....

How can I identify exactly which engine it is ???

What are the plastic tanks for the hang off the intake??

Are simple mods worth doing on these things?

there should be some sort of engine ID on the motor.
i'm not sure what plastic things your talking about. do you have pics?

as for being sluggish, has the motor been tuned up lately?

i'm sure someone with 4 banger knowledge will chime in soon.

Being that its an 03, It has the newer DOHC 2.3L.

01 was the change over year, Some had 2.5's others had the newer 2.3.

97 was the last year for the older 2.3L Lima engine, 98-00 was the last year for the 2.5L which is the same engine as the older 2.3 just with a longer stroke.

I just read the whole thread, In order for someone to swap from the newer 2.3 to the older 2.5 the entire wiring harness would have to be swapped.

I'm going to say someone put another 2.3L in it and you just need a tuneup.

As far as it being sluggish, Your driving a four cylinder pickup truck not a sports car.

lol x2 .... thats why i held out for the longest time and wanted to keep my integra but after 4 fix it tickets at once in febuary, having to buy a new trunklid with backglass, and it needing a tbelt / clutch / water pump / paint job soon i decided id cut my losses and get a truck ... so far im enjoying the utility aspect of it much more than i was enjoying going fast in the integra.

although im hopefully moving to AZ in 09, and might possibly take my friends 94 gsr with b20/vtec that wont pass california emissions with me.

yep

yeah thanks guys , after further review , it must be the the 2.3 .

I was reading about the engine change, it got me wondering , but it is definitely the 2.3 .

the stock intake tube has these 2 funny air tanks (small ones near the batterry side) hanging off it. I will probably get rid of them, as the seem to be useless, and add some kinda cold air intake.
Yep probably just a little sluggish , but I cant say that it running all that bad ...I am a little spots car biased
Is there a beneficial coil, wire plug replacement out there?

what code reader can be used on these trucks?

Oh man , I am gonna hook it up , hehehe
