Sometimes the Explorers have it already done to it. Press and hold the power button while the radio is on, and see if it gives you the option.

It changes. I had mine on 6, and it worked great.

Pull the head unit and look at the 20-pin connector of the radio harness. Check to see if you have a gray/black going to pin #9. If it has one, the SSV should work. If not, you will need to add it. Tee into the GY/BK at the instrument cluster or GEM (assuming the Sports have one) and extend a wire to pin #9 at the 20-pin radio connector and it should work.

Note: this only works for head units that display something like SPEED VOL when the volume **** is held depressed for 5+ seconds.

It depends on whether your head unit has SSV capability. Most factory Ranger head units do not.

Some six-discs do. Turn it on, then push and hold the volume button to find out.

My original dual media Ranger head unit did not have. I now have an Explorer dual media HU that is nearly identical in outward appearance and it has SSV.

When you put in the new one did you have to hook up the wire coming from the dash, or did it already have it on the harness? Because the CD6 that I have I believe came from an F series truck (dont know which one) and the speed vol thing comes up when I hold power, but even on 7 it doesn't change with my speed. And if I do need to tee into the gray/black wire from the instrument panel or GEM, is it easy to get to or am I going to have to tear apart my whole dash?

Ranger harnesses are not wired for SSV. You must add a wire from PIN 9 of the head unit's 20-pin connector to the truck's gray/black wire. On 2003-back Rangers, the gray/black is at the GEM behind the radio bezel to the left of the head unit.

It increases radio volume automatically with road speed. In helps to compensate for background wind and road noise. It only works if you have an SSV head unit.

I did this with my CD6 and love it. I would suggest to everyone to do this if you have a SSV head unit!
