Check Gauges

I have a Check Gauge light illuminated continuously on my truck.... The dealer changed out the oil pressure and water temperature sending units. Now the light periodically illuminates instead of staying on continuously.....
According to the FSM; there is nothing else that can cause this problem...
Anything else that could cause this problem ??

Lots of things can trip that light. Can you figure out if the computer is throwing an error code? That would identify why the light is coming on.

check gauge or check engine? cause a check gauge normally means you are low on fuel...

The CHECK GAGE indicator will illuminate if any of the following occur:

1. engine oil pressure drops below approximately 42 kPa (6 psi)
2. fuel level drops below approximately 4-8 L (1-2 gal)
3. engine temperature exceeds approximately 121ºC (250ºF)

If the system is throwing a code, that will help figure out if a sensor has gone bad. My guess is that there is a problem in the FLI (fuel level input) and the sensor may be bad, since low oil pressure and high temp are pretty obvious to diagnose.

Lots of things can illuminate the "Check Engine" light but only 3 should illuminate the "Check Gage" light:

Oil pressure switch open
High coolant temperature
Low fuel level

The CG light is illuminated by a ground supplied by the Anti-Slosh Module in the cluster. The module decides to supply that ground based on inputs from the oil pressure switch, the coolant temperature sender or the fuel level sender.

An intermittent open circuit between the oil pressure switch and the cluster will give an intermittent CG light but should also show zero on the oil pressure "gauge" at the same time.

An intermittent ground between the coolant temp sender and the cluster will give an intermittent CG light but should also show full scale on the coolant temp gauge at the same time.

An continuous ground between the fuel level sender and the cluster will give an continuous CG light but should also show low on the gauge at the same time. The fuel level gauge is electrically damped to prevent it from swinging back and forth as the fuel sloshes in the tank - hence the name "Anti-Slosh Module". So, it would be possible for short periods of grounding to illuminate the CG light without disturbing the gauge position much.

Other possibilities: a defective Anti-Slosh module could supply ground at the wrong time. A short to ground on the cluster trace between the Anti-Slosh Module and the CG light would also light it.

Dang Bob, you da man! Not to hijack a thread, but is there a way to get a signal from the Fuel level sensor system without digging up the dash?
I constantly run low on fuel since the "Check Gage" light is so hard to see in the Florida sun. I'd love to add a nice bright LED to tell me when fuel is low. Any ideas?

Since the path from the Anti-Slosh to the CG light is on one of the cluster traces, it would seem that you would have to pick up the switched ground there. You might be able to 'cheat' and trap a wire in the trace contact where the Anti-Slosh module plugs into the cluster. But the first challenge would be to trace the ground back from the CG light to the ASM to locate the correct spot. That position is not even documented in the Wiring Diagrams since the ASM is not available separately from the cluster (even though it is removable).

With that out of the way, you should just need the LED, a current-limiting resistor and keyed B+ to make it work. This all assumes that the ASM would not object to the extra draw of the LED - my guess is that it would work fine.

Bummer, seems like I'd have to wade through the dash to find the correct lead. I also looked in the wiring diagrams, but there is scarce info about the FLI. I'll just keep an eye on the fuel gage, like I'm supposed to

Adding to what I previously posted.... The movement of the oil pressure gauge is ever so slight and the coolant temperature gauge reacts properly. The gas gauge does not swing from the E to F, and appears to respond properly.... I generally park in my driveway at an incline and when I drive the truck it takes a short time before the gauge indicates properly.... The gauge starts out indicating higher than the actual tank level due to parking uphill.
Guess it could be the sloshing, but I dont see much movement from the needle.
Thanks for the information.....
