I could use some brake help/advice!

Umm, EWW!

This truck doesn't really get driven much anymore, and I can make guesses as to how it got so dirty and whatnot. But I need to replace everything in the back as cheaply as I can. Basically the brake pads and adjusters, and blah blah I don't know all the part names.

Is there any 7.5 rear end brake kits? Or can anyone help me figure out what all needs replaced. Or if anyone had pictures of a clean brake install on theirs, that'd be sweet.

1st off get some brake cleaner and get all the nonsense knocked off..

then you will need new shoes i think..heck i dnt know crap about drums..

but i know it will be easier to see what you need and to work with if you cleaned most of that junk off..

brake cleaner is a mans best friend..

wow looks like someone has been adding a lot of brake fliud to it?

you need 2 wheel cylinders, shoes, hardware, and 2 drums.

seems to me that if i had to add brake fluid to it a lot there might be something wrong.

Impressive.

Like the others said, get a new set of shoes, new drums (or turned at least, but I'd replace), a hardware kit (all the springs and adjusters), two new cylinders (probably), many many cans of brake cleaner, and a day.

Its not hard, just be sure to do one side at a time so you can remember how to put it back together.

is this your 04?

if so you have an 8.8 with 10" drums.

Prices.

25 for pads
15 for springs
15 each for wheel cylinders. (these are a must)
not sure on drums.

all that mess was caused from the wheel cylinder leaking!

Thanks, I have not noticed fluid leaking but I definately could tell something was wrong. What happened is the adjuster comes apart and then is eaten up by the brake pads getting jammed with it and the brake drum. This isn't the first time, and it's good that you pointed out the brake adjuster.

I'm gonna go ape**** on it with 10 gallons of brakleen

Nah I'm in Alaska, so it's my 99 4.0 with a 7.5, i need to measure my brake pad widths and drum size tho.

And 04Edge, I've never added fluid. My parents own a few other cars so it hasn't been driven. I've been back a month but I drove their mercedes the past 2 weeks while they've been outta town.

here is one somewhat cleaner. i know i have others but i cannot find them

Red_Ak_Ranger Jul 5, 2007 07:14 PM

Thanks Zach that's a pretty good picture. If I cannot find some diagrams it will come in handy, since I bet the other side is not pretty either.

you may want to check your axle seals also
