The dinger stays on even with lights off and key removed when the door is open I believe it's the switch and want to get a new switch with keys do the 97s have to be programmed

 

The dashboard dimmer switch is missing as well could that be the cause

 

No, 1997 Ranger used regular keys, no PATS key programming required

Keys are matched to door locks as well so if you change the ignition lock, doors would still need the old keys

Most likely issue is the ground at ignition cylinder, they can stick

When you insert the key that metal part is GROUNDED and that will activated the Chime(dinger) if the door is also open, when you remove the key it should unGround itself
So if that part is broken and/or touching any metal(a ground) then chime would come on anytime door was open

That part does come out and can be replaced or left off, taped up so it can't Ground itself

Yes, on every year with a chime

Door switch activates chime if door is opened and key is in ignition or headlight switch is on

 

Definitely gonna remove that bastard
