Interchangeable ECM

So i believe the ECM in my 1985 2.3 fuel injected ranger may have gone bad. Should that be the case what year ECMs will work? Or does anyone have any suggestions on who to get a reproduction ECM from if I cannot find one in a junkyard.

Thanks!

Ford doesn't publish ECM detail codes and interchangeability, so best bet is to find one close to your year.
It needs to be for a 2.3l with your engines parts, i.e. distributor, EGR
It will need to be made for either a Manual trans or an automatic, which ever you have, ECMs are different for each

Here is some code number info: Fuel Injection Technical Library » EEC Program Codes

If you look at the other numbers in the pictures you will see -12A650- with numbers in front and in back, this is the part number of ALL Ford computers, they still use the same number in 2015, lol, so 0 value

But the numbers in front of it can be helpful, the first two
E = 1980
F = 1990
So E7 at the start = 1987
E9 = 1989
F4 = 1994

So those two digits tell you the model year it was made for

The numbers after the 12A650- can tell you if it was for a manual or automatic but don't have that data for Rangers, usually it is the last number that IDs the trans, so try to match that, if you have a manual trans it doesn't matter that much but...............

mustang ecu might work. speed density 87 to 90. if you find it hard to find what you need in the ranger junk yard a 2.3l mustang may be a good place to start.
