odometer problem

Weird..never had this problem before nor have ever heard of it. My odometer is "hardly" working. I was checking mileage on a trip and looked at odometer to see the mileage. I know I traveled a good way and my odometer only showed two tenths (2/10th) of a mile. I then set my trip odometer and it worked fine. I went seventeen miles and my odometer only showed that I had gone one and nine tenths miles (l.9) Any suggestions or comments?

Sounds like a plastic gear is broken. I would take your instrument cluster apart and check the gears.

I must have a terminal case of the dumb-***. My son borrowed my Ranger for a few days and I told him about the odometer problem and I ask him to keep an eye on it. He brought it back and said "Dad, your odometer isn't broke.....you don't have "tenths" of a mile on the odometer, full miles only. Your trip odometer has the tenths". I was forced to be just a little embarrassed about then............could have grabbed my beer and crawled under the truck.....
