Well, in a few weeks I will be putting my new exhaust on. I am wanting to put red leds in the tips for a glowing effect at night. i was wondering if I could put the led bolts into the tip and if the heat would effect it or not

FoMoCoFiddy Jun 22, 2004 01:24 AM

Yea, it would blow up....

no, but seriously, it would im sure...

SoundPer4mance Jun 22, 2004 04:05 AM

they sell exhaust tips that have leds built in. they used to sell them at autozone, im sure you can get them at jcwhitney though

FireRanger Jun 22, 2004 05:24 AM

If you just put them facing into the pipe, I think they would get all messed up. Between the heat and the crap coming out of the pipe, it probably wouldn't last very long.

Mnemonic Jun 22, 2004 06:43 AM

Yeah, take any extended drives, and I'm sure the heat would melt them, if not any insulating wires close by. The tips you see on the street have two pipes. The inner is the actual exhaust pipe, and the outer is just for show. The LEDs fit inbetween the two pipes so they are a little more insulated.

blacknight Jun 23, 2004 09:51 AM

what bout gettin that insulated/fireproof material to go around the end of the exhaust to where you plan on puttin the LEDs?

PickupMan92 Jun 23, 2004 10:23 AM

what about jsut saving your money and putting it toward the engine?

Wowak Jun 23, 2004 10:35 PM

Sorry, the LED tailpipes are straight rice. :(

thelowranger Jun 24, 2004 12:35 AM

its not rice at all....i am putting a new exhaust on and am having the rectangle z28 tips coming out flush mounted to the rollpan and i wanted to have 2 sets of red leds to light em up at night, 1 set for running lights and the other set for the brake lights

saying you are getting Z28 tips and using LEDs in them ain't much better than RICE dude "all show and no go" ever hear that?

put the LEDs in the tips, once they melt and the wires are exposed you can shoot flames instead ;)

jdugan4859 Jul 31, 2004 12:23 PM

I am glad someone called him out on this one, I held back, but it is straight rice, and don't mix makers either. Also for anyone that says it is his truck, he can do what he wants, your a moron.

If it were me, I would just dump the exaust before the axle, add LED tailights to the roll pan, and shave your tail lights. Can I also ask why, since your frenched the plate did you not shave the handle?

mental ambiguity Jul 31, 2004 12:53 PM

It's not my style. And for the most part, I think it's ricey. But, I think (as with most things) that in the right application, it has potential to look pretty good. Problem is: finding the right application.

thanks all for your imput, i asked a tech question and i get flamed. as for the handle shave it will be done before its painted.

Buttercup Aug 1, 2004 07:00 AM

Maybe you'll be able to get sponsorship from Uncle Bens that will give you money to do better things to your truck.

LILBLUE04FX4L2 Aug 1, 2004 07:49 AM

As with most things in life, if YOU think it is looks good, feels good, tastes good, or sets up something good, GO FOR IT!!!

With all the whining  about this site not having enough technical information you would hope when someone asks a technical question (how do I keep the LEDS from frying at the exhaust tip) he might get more intelligent answers.

But NO mostly social commentary.

I would look for an aftermarket part that already has the LEDS installed. Would defiantly need to be a double walled device, and if you could have the LEDS glow brighter with higher revs that would be very pimp. Like the party/dance lights that are in tune to the music.

Wowak Aug 1, 2004 08:49 AM

Your question has already been answered, you CANNOT just put LEDs inside your tailpipes, they would melt. Thats why the LED tips are double-walled with air flow vents to cool the LEDs and keep them seperate from the exhaust gasses.

Maybe you can recess the tips back under the bumper and mount a neon tube for a similar effect?

thelowranger Aug 1, 2004 10:16 PM

this is how i want it to look http://memimage.cardomain.com/member...00_21_full.jpg

FireRanger Aug 2, 2004 09:01 AM

His question was answered and the thread died a long time ago. Someone decided to bring it back to life and it went to hell from there.

To everyone who jumped on the bandwagon here, flaming someone because you don't like their style only shows your own mentality, not that of the person you are flaming.

PickupMan92 Aug 2, 2004 09:08 AM

I think we gave him the input because we are a fellow ranger owner and would hate to see him GET FLAMED MORE BY OTHERS when the mod is done.
The same has Wowak questioning Chirstians purchase of the 4x4, he was concerned. That's all we are as well.
