1997 Mazda B2300 2.3l Manual

So I have a re manufactured engine from Carolina Machine Engines CME recently installed (by myself) and its leaking oil from behind the Harmonic ballancer pulley. Not the oil pan gasket. I've talked to CME about it and its their fault and they will pay for the repair.

My question is should I do this myself and let them send me the seal or take it to a dealer and fork the bill to CME? I trust myself and the work I do more than any dealer, However this is not my responsibility so I wouldn't mind passing the job off.

Do i have to remove the timing cover? Or timing belt? or just the pulley and the seal. I didn't look at the area very close during the install

I doubt they damaged the seal during install i'm betting the crank is grooved and could use a repair sleeve.

I would like to do it my self if its as simple as removing a pulley that should come right off cause it just went on last week, prying out the seal, hammer on the sleeve and reassemble.

And advice appreciated.

 

Yes, you do need to pull the timing belt off and behind that is the engine's front cover which the front main seal fits into.
It is easier to remove the front cover to get out the old seal but that also requires loosening the oil pan.
If you do take off the front cover then it needs to be aligned again so it is centered on the crank , if this wasn't done originally then that may be why the seal is leaking now.

If I remember correctly you put the front cover back in place, with all it's bolts in, but loose.
The alignment tool fits on over the crank and thru the hole in front cover, no seal in yet.
This centers the cover with crank, then you tighten up and torque down the front cover


So a bit of work.
