Air conditioning question

Immediately after starting the engine on my 4.0L SOHC the air conditioning compressor will cycle on and off a few times with the engine idling - even with the a/c turned off. Is that normal? It seems to engage properly when the a/c is turned on although it hasn't been warm enough yet this summer to make sure the system is still working properly.

Also, I noticed a little puddle of condensation under the truck the other day even though I did not use the a/c while I was driving and some of the refrigerant lines were cold and had condensation on them.

Does this mean that the a/c compressor is running when it shouldn't be? What would cause this?

EDIT: I've just found a post on an explorer forum talking about the a/c kicking on to dry the air when using certain vent settings...is that true?

Floor only and floor / vent are the only two positions the A/C does not turn on.

I do know that the A/C comes on with the defrost position to keep your windows from fogging up if that is any help.
