Long-distance towing w/ 2.3L 4 cyl
 

Hi there,

I own a 2007 Ranger XL (5-speed, 2.3 L) and will be moving about 2,000 miles. I'm hoping to tow a trailer (weight no more than 3,500 lbs). The route should be fairly flat, Barrie, ON to Saskatoon, SK, via Chicago.

I will also have the box loaded, though it won't be with really heavy stuff. Does this seem doable? Any considerations for this journey? Obviously and oil-change and inspection, but any other specific maintenance that should be conducted?

The truck is in pretty good shape, about 67,000 miles on it at the moment.

no...the 2.3 tow rating is only 1500 i think at thats even being generous...get yourself a fullsize

You can haul all of your stuff, and the Ranger at the same time.

Thanks for the replies. I was looking at the wrong number, sorry for that. I found the proper towing capacity later.

I looked at renting a Uhaul truck, but it's $2,500 compared to $600 for a trailer. don't have a ton of stuff, but I need a trailer big enough for a queen bed, meaning I need a larger trailer. It won't necessarily be loaded down, I just need the door size. The trailer that is available requires a hitch with 3,500 lbs capacity (that's where the # came from)

Obviously, buying a new truck for the move is not in the cards.

that trailer is too heavy empty...dry weight is 1900lbs...and thats 400 over your tow rating...you need a U-haul truck...plain and simple

I'm not sure of its weight, but I saw this one yesterday.

I used a 5x8 trailer when I moved. like DJ said, the 6x12 trailer is already 2k lbs, its heavy! I didnt even want to pull that with my 4.0

If you can get all your stuff in a 5x8 uhaul trailer you should be fine. Pulled one with my B2300 with the bed loaded as well from Oregon to the Bay Area, over the highest point on I5 (3000 ft?) and it was smooth sailing. Just make sure all the heavy stuff is in the truck bed and the trailer is loaded with the weight forward. Take it slow and keep a good distance between the car ahead. Way better deal than renting a truck!
