May need to replace crankshaft need help and info
A year ago I totaled my 2003 ford ranger with the 4.0 SOH ended up smoking a tree at about 50mph dead center and bent my harmonic balancer almost an inch out of plumb Potentially bending the crankshaft it still started but vibrated violently so I quickly shut it off is it worth fixing the motor i believe I can do it myself what else may be damaged if I bent or shifted the crank shaft?

Have the block manufluxed for cracks and fractures.
If the engine has high miles on it, 300k plus, you may want to consider a short block or rebuild the old one _ if no damage was found to the block.
How's the frame and front suspension though ?

Ok it only had 140k on it but im just interested trying to fix the motor and put it in another body the frame is beyond repair
I can't think of a quick way to tell if the engine is damaged other then to take the engine apart.
Take the heads off, remove the pan and pistons.
The crank should spin easily and freely.
If the front of the crank has been damaged, I would think it would be pretty obvious to see.

Remove the balancer/pulley and put a dial indicator on the shaft and rotate the crankshaft using the bolt. May want to start on one side of the key slot and rotate it until you get to the other side. This will tell you the runout, if it's too high (I'm thinking anything over 0.003" then that crank is bent.
You have to pull the engine out in any case so I would do that first.
You probably didn't bend the crank if engine was running at the time of the crash but would have damaged the thrust bearings and may have broken the tip at harmonic balancer, you could see that easily.
If you have an automatic the weight of the torque converter(full of fluid) could bend flexplate and put stress on the back of the crank at the sudden stop.
But overall engine should be fine
2003 needed new timing chains as well so just do a rebuild
