Hi everyone, I recently bought a 1994 Ford ranger (3.0l v6) (automatic) and noticed that there are some parts missing/detached under the hood. If anyone can help me identify what is missing it would be greatly appreciated. I am unsure where the tube in the first image is supposed to attach. I don’t know what the thing I am holding in the second picture is and the hose in the third picture appears to be sucking in air while the truck is running. I also noticed that my ranger is missing an EGR sensor (I can order the sensor but I don’t know what tubes to attach to it). The truck is having issues starting (it dies after a few seconds unless I press the gas pedal for a bit. I am also getting these codes: 542, 543, 116, 327.
116 (O,R) Engine Coolant (ECT) sensor out of range – ECT
327 (O,R,M) EGR feedback signal is/was low – EVR or PFE
542 (O,M) Fuel pump open, bad ground or always on – – Power / Fuel Pump Circuits
543 (O) Fuel pump monitor circuit shows no power – Power / Fuel Pump Circuits
1994 was last year for distributor and EEC-IV Computer in 3.0l Rangers, just FYI, so only 1991-1994 3.0l will have the same systems, 1995 and up 3.0ls are are different
Code 116
ECT sensor sets the CHOKE mode when engine is cold, so important sensor
There are TWO different temp devices near thermostat housing on top front of engine
ECT sensor, 2 wires, 5volts, only used by the computer
Temp Sender, 1 wire, 12volts, only used by dash board temp gauge
Unplug ECT's 2 wire connector and check that the wires and connections look OK, if so then replace the sensor
You can test it with OHM Meter, Google: ECT sensor OHMs graph
Code 327
Obviously if there was no DPFE sensor plugged in computer would see a "low" signal
Codes 542 and 543 are odd unless you have unplugged some wires or fuses when checking things out with key on
When you turn on the key you should hear the fuel pump run but ONLY for 2 seconds, if it stays running then someone have "hot wired it", and you would get those codes
First pic
On top of the blower motor housing is a Black plastic "torpedo", that's the Vacuum Reservoir, in 1991-1994 it is used for EGR vacuum
See if it has an open port, if so that's where that end should plug in
Second pic
EVAP system solenoid, purge solenoid............if the wire colors are Red and Grey/yellow
If you look under the battery tray you should see the EVAP systems Charcoal canister and it will have an open hose or port
You can/should cap/tape the end of open tube for now, to stop the vacuum leak
It should hook up to open port on solenoid with a short connection hose like the other side has
And then open hose goes to charcoal canister's open port
There is no in/out direction on the solenoid, its just a valve
EVAP system sucks gasoline fumes out of the tank to be burned in the engine while driving, its not a monitored system in 1994
Outside of the vacuum leak the EVAP system has no effect on engine operation
Third pic
Yes, unhooked/missing DPFE(PFE) sensor connector, and the hoses for it have been looped
Look just under the connector at the EGRs metal exhaust tube, there are two ports, and one hose from each port would connector to the DPFE sensor
Some one has removed one hose and looped the other hose over to seal the tube so no exhaust leaks
DPFE sensors do have one hose that's larger than the other because they do have a "direction", same for ports on EGR tube
