My Truck = Electrical nightmare!!!

Here is the issue I am having and if someone can answer it then you have one up and a lot of people! :drive:

I have a 97 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 4.0l I believe it is a California Emission model truck I live in ky so emission check are not something I have to worry with. The previous owner torched part of the engine wiring harness on my truck the part of the harness that plugs into the firewall on the passenger side. I have looked at a couple of different harness at the junkyard and I cannot find one that has numbers that match mine. The last one I got had all the connectors I needed but the wires were different colors than what are on my truck. So how do I know how to get the exact harness for my truck?? :please[1]

your best bet is to order a new harness if it is still available

That's the problem I don't know where to get one :/

I've noticed that from the ford parts website it also seems to matter if it is California emission or not. It would be so nice if it were easier 😡 I tried typing in the numbers on the plug itself to see if anything popped up as far a part number annnnnnnd of course I got nothing lol

when you call ford parts

provide them with your VIN# their computer screen will tell them which harness is correct

If it is the one I am thinking it will cost a small fortune to get! It would be really nice if they could just tell me what numbers to look for on the harness so I could go to the junkyard and pick one up on the cheap. I did a search in google with the numbers I found on the plug

F5SB-14A464-AA when I type that number I get a few hits

021 5K31A0 b when I type this number I don't get anything

When I typed both into the ford parts search I got nothing on either makes me wonder if it has ben discontinued.

F5SB-14A464-AA is just a part of the main engine compartment wiring harness

trying to find a used harness is crap shoot , do not take risks with your safety

the new harness may cost a small fortune , is your life not worth it!

I am not going to argue any of those points. I just gotta find out why mine doesn't show up in their parts list

I had a similar problem with a Toyota. Nobody torched the harness, but I found a section with melted, mangled wires. I pulled the harness apart and repaired around 15 wires. All of the wires were color-coded, so no two wires were the same. I cut out the mangled section. The I used short sections of new wire to connect the ends of each of the damaged wires in the harness. I used solder joints and heat-shrink tubing. I was careful to stagger the joints so as not to cause the harness to bulge too much in one place. Got some new overall split flexible harness cover to replace the burned section. It works fine. Some photos are attached.
