Need my "Master Key Code"

If this is answered elswhere, I apologize in advance. I did search.

So i went to a local Ford dealer and they can sell me a pair of Ford keys and program them for my anti-theft system. I said i want to get the keys factory cut, not clone-cut, and they said they can do that if I have the "Master Key Code" for my truck. I told them I don't have that, how can I get it? They said if the vehicle is less than 7 years old they could provide it, other wise no because Ford only keeps the records going back 7 years.

Can anyone tell me what my options are for getting a "Master Key Code"? The key I got from the used car dealer I bought my Ranger from is pretty worn down and I'd rather not clone that. I even asked the dealer if they might have the master key code and they do not - they bought the truck at auction, as is.

Would I need to buy a new set of door locks and ignition cylinder lock to get a key code, or is there another way? This is for a 2004 Ranger. Thanks

If Ford doesn't have it and you don't have original owners manual(usually on a sticker) then you are out of luck.

Many locksmiths can cut keys as new(from worn keys) and add them to PATS system faster and cheaper than Ford Dealer
Locksmiths do this for a living, cutting keys is a sideline for Ford employee

If you pull the ignition lock many of them have it engraved toward the tail end, looks like a dot matrix imprint

Thanks for this information. I pulled the ignition and found the number I believe you are talking about. It looks, like you said, like a dot-matrix code stamped into the metal. Mine is 5 digits: four numbers and a "B" or "8" for the fifth digit (it's a little hard to read).

Are you sure this code can be used to cut a factory key? I showed it to my locksmith and he looked up `04 Rangers in this book he has. He showed me that the code does not fall within the range specified for my year/make/model.

Chevy(GM) did have code on key cylinder, didn't think Ford ever did that.

There are some locksmiths that have or subscribe to a database that has purchased "Master key number from VIN" from Auto Makers, so have the older numbers
You do need proof of ownership, and they WILL charge you for the Master number

These guys look like they may have some older Master number: http://www.bobssafeandlock.com/KeyByVIN
You may have a local locksmith that can do this as well, call around

THANKS Ron!

I sent them a message to see if they offered just the codes and code cut keys and prices.

Just checking to see if I have another option for customers with vehicles older than 10yrs that I can't get codes for anymore.

GOOD info!

I don't know if they will do that since it will be hard for you to prove you are the owner and not a thief that just got a VIN from windshield.

I was suggesting you call other locksmiths in your area to see if they have the same access to older VIN/master
