New 2008 FX4 with constant thumping sound...

I have a new (only 2000 miles) FX4 Ranger with the 4.0L and it has a constant thumping sound even when sitting still. It makes a little thump sound every couple minutes or so even when sitting still. When sitting still, you can see the idle blip a little when the sound occurrs. The sound is kind of muffled, but even passengers notice it. Any ideas what it could be? Is this normal for Rangers?

See if it does it with the HVAC control in OFF.

Compressor clutch cycling?

Thanks, will do. Assuming that is what is happening, is that normal? I am not running the A/C or defrost so it seems that it shouldn't cycle but I am no expert.

the A/C compressor runs on ALL settings EXCEPT for upper vents only and floor vents only.....

If you run it on head and feet it will still run the compressor, if that helps any...

Excellent color choice. ;)

I too suspect your feeling it kick on and off. The compressor is the belt driven accessory that's right below your battery. Open the hood and see if it starts spinning at the same time you feel the thump. (turn defrost or ac on)

Now.. it should not be too big of a thump. There may be a possibiliy that something is wrong and yours is out of spec. If you think so.. take it back and have the service dept look at it.
