New Alternator?

well in a few months down the road i plan on adding about 6 -7 130watt KC Daylighers on my truck. 4 or 5 on top of a roll bar in the bed and 2 on a bull bar. i also have a sound sytem in my truck. its just one 12" sub but it draws a good bit i believe. so to power all these lights with my system do you think i will need a new alternator? and if so how do i go about finding one and what size/kind would be best? thanks!

Check this out, they have custom ones factory is either a 95 or 130, see how well your truck does with stock alternator, if its real bad Id maybe go 200, if it just dimms then I would try a 170. Id probably go 170 anyway as I dont see all that drawing another 40 amps but I dunno much about KC lights.

thanks alot thomas! i will deffinatly see how the stock one performs. but just today i noticed that when i turn up my volume on my cd player and the bass is hitting pretty good but not as hard as it can, my needle on the voltage gauge is constantly sweeping back and forth from 0 to 14. sometimes my low battery light even comes on for a second or so! time to invest in a capacitor i reckon!

Mine does the same thing. a cap wont really fix that problem. Your best bet is a new alternator. I will be getting one once I have some spare cash.

don't forget to upgrade the power & ground wires too.
it will make a HUUUUGE difference with the added current with a new alt (not to mention the wimpy stock wires won't handle the increased current)
i just upgraded to a 200a alt with 1/0ga wires, i can have everything turned on, lights, wipers, windows, ac, aux lights, stereo... voltage doesn't drop below 14v now.
the cap will band-aid the voltage dropping issue, but it will stress your battery & stock alt.

Yea if you can afford it just do it. I put one in last week b/c I added an electric fan on top of my 2 12" subs and 2000 watt inverter! IDK if anyone else had a similar issue but check the pully size of your new alternator when you get it. I know on mine it's larger in order to turn slower, but at idle it's not enough voltage. Just an FYI.

junesmodified doesnt sell custom alternators...they are just regular old large case 3Gs. u can go the the junkyard, find the right one u need and walk away a lot happier. the 3G alts, even from a junkyard, are very robust and rarely fail. it is a popular upgrade with the older F-series and BKO guys, most of which get them from the junkyard.

there is also a site where u can buy upgraded parts to convert to a 200A alt for around $100. so for under $150 u can have a 200A alt that is realible, rugged and available at any parts store.

Be careful before you spend a lot of cash on an alt. Any lighting issues will be at idle. If the extra amps kick in at higher rpms you haven't really gained anything. Amperage at idle is whats important.

large case 3G (which is what junes sells) offer 90-100A at idle and 150-165A at 2,000 rpm.
