No reverse lights
 

So the other day i was backing out of my driveway, and my neighbor told me that i had no reverse lights. Then i changed the bulbs, and they are still not working. I then decided to change the fuse, and that didn't work. I looked in my Chilton to see if it was the right size fuse, and it wasn't. I then put in the right size, and they still failed to work.

My buddy told me it could be my neutral safety switch/backup lamp switch. Has anyone had experience with replacing this switch? And what is the price of this switch?

If anyone thinks its something else please inform me to the best of your knowledge!!

are you sure the fuse you used was good are one that was lying around? i had the same problem changed the fuse and all better

make sure the harness connector behind the rear bumper isnt corroded.

Do you have an automatic or manual tranny? I have a manual, and sometimes the shift stick doesn't hit the switch...resulting in no reverse lights. A shot of grease will do the trick. And if you have an auto, I imagine it's the same concept, just don't have a clue where that switch would be.

I used a brand new fuse from my autoparts store.

If it's corroded, you can clean it out with some spray and a wire brush.....or tooth brush (just don't use your good one..LOL)

OR, just replace the harness.


Here's a PIN POINT test off my Ford CD for a 2001 Ranger....it might help you....make a sig so we know your (year, engine size, drive system...etc...)

R1: CHECK CIRCUIT 298 (PK/OG) FOR VOLTAGE

Put your key ignition to position 2...as shown.

Measure the voltage between the digital TR sensor C167 pin 9, circuit 298 (VT/OG) (A/T), harness side and ground; or between the reversing lamp switch C169, circuit 298 (VT/OG) (M/T), harness side and ground.

l Is the voltage greater than 10 volts?

Yes

Go to «R2».

No

REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.


R2: CHECK CIRCUIT 140 (BK/PK) FOR CONTINUITY

Leave your ignition in the OFF position.

Measure the resistance between the digital TR sensor C167 pin 11, circuit 140 (BK/PK) (A/T), harness side and ground; or between the reversing lamp switch C169, circuit 140 (BK/PK) (M/T), harness side and ground.

l Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes

INSTALL a new digital TR sensor (A/T) or reversing lamp switch (M/T). REFER to «Section 307-01A» or «Section 307-01B». TEST the system for normal operation.

No

REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

Thanks for the info man and i did get them to work i just cleaned it out with an old toothbrush, then snapped it back together and was excited when they came on!!

At the top of every post, the date and time it was posted is displayed.

And we would need the year of "your co-workers" Ranger to guide you as to what connectors are involved

Generally there is the one on the transmission, manual or automatic matter, and the one at drivers side rear where tail light harness connects to truck harness
