whinning noise question

my trucks always made this Whinning noise since i can remember, im not sure exactly where its coming from, (i was told oil pump, transmission, or the power stearing) but it does it when im at an idol, and does it worse when i turn at low speeds. it sounds like a typical ford whine, but idk if theres a way to get rid of it or lessen it? or if anyone can shed some light on it for me

mine does the exact same thing now, we are still trying to figure it out....right now my power steering has been leaking though, still after i replaced a hose....so going to replace this other hose, and if not, going to just replace the whole unit. ill let you know on here how it goes, im really hoping it will stop once all this leaking is done, and with new PS fluid

try draining out the power steering fluid, 85-90% lucas power steering stop leak, then rest power steering fluid. ive noticed that doing that, some days it doesnt do it, some days it does. but im hoping mine does it because of leaks and like worn out pinons and whatnot(says on the bottle it cleans them up and whatnot, even stops squealing).but this morning we just cleaned everything, tightened some stuff up. and going to wait and see by tomorrow where its leaking. i feel your pain, and ive only had my truck for a month haha

aight.. wel i tuned my truck up today.. oil change.. new fuel filter.. oil filter air filter.. seafoam, and i bought the wrong lucas oil stuff.. cause i never read lables fully.. so i added that to my engine oil..

but neway i flushed my old power stearing fuild out (was looking very chunky) and it seems to have made a significant difference.. it still moans alot, but its less and stearing smoother.

still squealing?that sucks....mine is too, and still leaking a quarter or more of a spot....think for me im going to have to replace the whole unit. but its weird with mine, when i start my truck, sometimes it does it, and sometimes it doesnt. its a mystery im still trying to solve :/. but i do notice at low speeds and big turns it does it. every time i pull into the driveway it does it, and when i exit. radio tunes it out well though :P. but i dunno man, wish there was a person that had this problem and knows the solution. this will get fixed one day, i will find out how!haha

Generally at low speeds the pump has to put forth more effort to turn the tires. You are probably just experiencing the classic Ford whine. But if your steering rack is leaking, I would replace it as soon as you can.

From what I hear, the Lucas Oil stuff, or any synthetic power steering fluid helps quite ours down immensely.

Ive just gotten used to it lol.

welll i tried the Lucas oil power stearing treament. i drained my power stearing, and flushed it out with clean stuff a few times, then put a whole bottle of lucas oil in and topped it off with power stearing fuild.

its only been in a few hours, but allllmost no difference, i think it might have smoothed out a few things, but thats all.

problem solved!!!
finally, no more squealing!!you need to get a new pump and reservoir. well, at least thats what i did. it was a pain in the *** changing the whole thing out though. you need a power steering pulley kit to remove it, i had to rent one at autozone. but after doing all that today, and drove it around a little bit, and it was completely gone :D. im not sure if its just the pump, or both, but i ended up changing both for $46. well at first you got to pay the full price, 86 for me, then give them your old reservoir and all, and they give you money back when you take it in
