anyone got any ideas? 1 of my fog lights works (the passanger side) and the other doesn't (driver side).....i checked the plug and there is NO power getting to it......is there a place on my truck the power splits off after the relay? could it be a bad relay (is there a way to test the relays?)?

i guess i could just jump a wire from the + on the passanger side light to the + on the driverside light, but i don't want to overload the wiring, nor do i want to make it clustered...

BTW: i have checked the switch, and swapped it out with another switch....same thing happens..

did you check fuses? i might have been seeing things, but last time i checked my owners manual, they have driver and passenger side lights on separate fuses for some reason

 

mine only has 1 fuse for the fogs in the cab, then a relay for the fogs under the hood......the fuse is good...

 

i also know the bulb is good......since it isn't getting power at the plug.....and the filament in the bulb is still good...

 

i would check the wires and plugs for that side that does not work

if its a relay the relay would have a pole for each fog light. i dont think they do that.

 

i know the relay has 5 pins on it....

wow....the wiring is gonna be hard to trace since it is all in factory taped wire loom

It'll be perfectly acceptable (electrical load-wise) to splice the original wiring from one lamp's power wire to the other. That IS the way it is done from the factory, schematically, just after the foglamp relay - one wire out of the relay, to splice S127.

FWIW, the splice (S127, location unknown to me) also routes (that same) power back to the switch for led illumination that the switch is ON.

Each foglamp uses its own separate ground (G103 and G105 in 2000, each aft fenderwell). Those grounds are multi-use, so I don't suspect your problem is there (assuming that you used the meter's ground lead in the connector, rather than hitting the chassis). But it's worth a look if you've done anything in that area.

I'd peel back the wiring going away from the DS foglamp to try to find that (broken) splice.

Is your power wire TN/OG?

Does your switch "illuminate", showing foglamps are ON?

the switch shows that the lights are on....

wouldn't the plug still be getting power IF the ground was bad? i didn't use the plug for the ground, i used a spot on the chassie.....

 

Before I got to work on the wire loom, I would check and see if the ground wire is still good on the fog light. If it is, then I'd go ahead and check the 12v wire on there. Whichever one doesn't work (hopefully its only one), follow that to the furthest point you can, then test it there with a push pin and voltmeter to see if it has any voltage at that point. If there is voltage at that point, you've got a break in the wire somewhere.

replacing the relay would be the cheapest and easiest thing to do

Correct. One output from the relay, to a splice.

Splice feeds each lamp plus the switch's led for ON indication.


BUT, I'm looking at a 2000 wiring diagram manual.

I doubt they did it differently for 97.

 

dang.....i wish the wiring diagrams told ya were the splice was......i would imagine it is somewhere close since they wouldn't run wire all the way to the front, splice into the wire and run it all the way back to inside the cab (atleast i would hope not)...

since the relay has 5 pins on it, could the light in the switch for lights on be a normally closed light....when the relay is switched to send power to the light and it takes the contactor off the center pin, it causes the light to come on......just curious....i don't have the wiring diagrm infront of me.

 

i will have to look at my Chilton Manual when i get home to see if i can figure out how it was done....

 

Did both fog lights work before you installed your last e-fan? Is there a chance you cut a wire(s) in the process of installing your e-fan?

 

i got it fixed....it was a bad ground in the light.....thanks for the help fella's...

 

How does the entire "chassie" loose ground, and makes 1 fog light stop working?

 

it was the ground inside the light itself.....one on the bulb.....i must not have had my volt meter pushed in all the way when i metered it...

 

I have had a car wash unplug one side of my lights before. Not totally removing the plug just yanking it out a bit. The where the fog harness plugs into the chassis harness on the rad support.
