odometer quit working

The odometer on my '99 quit working. The speedo still works fine. I assume one cable works both. Any suggestions?

there is a gear behind the dash that turns the odometer...that prolly broke

yep. the odometer has a small plastic gear, and it's common for it to break. btw, there is no speedo cable on a 95+. it's all electronic.

time to start looking for a new cluster. may be a perfect time to upgrade to an explorer sport white face or even the 03 silver cluster.

Are you sure its electronic, drppdyllwrngr. My odo is definitely mechanical. Is that gear available by itself?

the gear should be available and it is strange but the odometer is mechanical but it gets its signal electronically from the VSS

yep. that's what i was referring to. 95 they did away with the speedo cable. the odometer has a little electric motor on it. but there are still gears to move both the trip and odometer.

but like what you said earlier...i would just put a new cluster in not worth the hassle of fighting with those gears

Thanks guys. If I can perform surgery on the odometer and put a gear in it, I'll do it. I'm sure it's cheaper than another cluster. Guess you got to get the gear from the stealership?

this will help greatly!! experiancing same prob with my 95....could be the gear or could be the VSS sensor located on tailhousing of tranny (or t-case) You can go to junkyard and get another cluster on an avg of around $25-$50,
