odometer quit working

Pulled the instrument cluster on 99 Ranger and expected to see a broken worm gear: not the case. It looks fine. It's a white one and seems to be intact. The speedometer works fine. Could the motor that works the odometer be bad and how would you check? Would really prefer not to get a whole new cluster as I would like to keep the registered mileage.

most of the time it's the gear. i guess it could be possible that the motor is bad. if you get a new cluster, you can change the mileage of the new one. there is a how to on here on how to change the mileage.

Thought I would try to remove odometer motor and see if worm gear is slipping on shaft. Anyone know how to remove the odometer motor? Clockwise or counterclockwise?

did you look in the how to? i think it covers it.

Thanks drppdyllwrngr that helped. Still a little foggy about how to get that pinion motor off with out breaking the retaining clips.

i can't remember if i did anything special or not. i know it is very tight ad hard on the fingers. it should pretty much turn off.

Well I guess I got lucky. I unplugged the odo motor connection then plugged it back and it started working. Not sure if it was that connection or the main connection to the speedo but it started working.

well it will prob stop workin again..thats what ,mine does..it works for a lil bit the stops..im thinkin either that worm gear is bad and get hung up from time to time or the actual motor is going in and out. I HOPE that fixed your prob though!!
