OHC flickering display
A few weeks a go my truck got broken into and they completely destroyed my dash. Insurance paid for a new dash and I had the Ford Dealership install it.
Needless to say, in rewiring my factory stereo, transfer case switch, cig lighter, and air bag indicator (into the radio bezel), they obviously didnt re-wire my OHC. Tonight I rewired it, and my problem is that when the headlights are on, the display flickers It does in fact dim properly, but has an annoying flicker that is intermittent (sometimes it flickers, I turn the headlights off and then back on, and the flickering stops). It does not flicker at all with the headlights off leading my to beleive that there is a problem with the dimming function, but I do not know where to begin looking for this bug. Do you guys think that it is an issue with my wiring or the OHC itself? Here is the wiring instructions from Bob aka "rwenzing": Explorer Overhead Console ---> 07~08 Ranger Console Power: Yellow/Gray ---> White/Blue (white wire with blue stripe - radio harness) Console Ground: Black ---> chassis ground Console Night Dim: Light Blue/Red or Red/Black ---> Blue/White (blue wire with white stripe - radio harness) Console Maps: Green/Orange ---> Violet/Red (radio harness) Console Dome: Black/Blue ---> Green/Blue (above factory dome) Console VSS: Gray/Black ---> Purple/Orange (pin #1 of the center PCM connector) These two would be wired separately from the truck harness: Console temp: Dark Blue/White ---> Temp sensor Dark Blue/White Console temp: Dark Blue/Yellow ---> Temp sensor Dark Blue/Yellow (Important: the 2007~2008 Ranger no longer has practical way to tap the "Battery Saver" feature for use with the Ex console map lights. So, if a map light is wired to a constant hot (Violet/Red as shown above) and it is inadvertently left on overnight, it could kill the battery. An alternative would be to wire the maps to the keyed console power (White/Blue referenced above). Of course, then the maps would only work with the key in the RUN or ACC position. It's a matter of preference.) |
First thing I would do is unplug the dimmer wire and see if the flickering stops. If it does then there would be your problem. I would also check the connections at the OHC because it sounds like you may just have a loose wire.

I personaly think that the wire that makes the display show is loose. Console Power: Yellow/Gray ---> White/Blue (white wire with blue stripe - radio harness)

My ohc will go from full bright to dim in a flicker when i hit bumps.
I have chased it back to a either bad or incorrect sized butt connector. Wiggle the wire and it will flicker. My problem is with the dimmer circuit. Not sure if yours is the same. Wiggle your wires till you find the problem. |
is there anyway to stop it from dimming when i turn my headlights on?

Dimmer is on light blue/ red.
IMHO, without the dimmer the OHC is too bright at night. Its very distracting. |
Anyone found a fix for this? Installing mine soon...
Who else has installed one in a 2007+ ? |
I've had this happen twice since I installed mine. The first time was due to a pinched wire that I ran up the A pillar - it was grounding out. The second time it was a bad rheostat (dimmer switch)
