heat stuck on defrost

heat stuck on defrost

So... My 99 ford ranger V6 3.0 L 2x4 had an issue with the heat only being on if the fan was on the highest setting. So i looking into it and heard its probably the resistor box. So i thought it was under my dash. I took out this white thing under my dash thinking it was the resistor box, it was actually the diverter to select which fan setting i wanted. So i put it back but no i only have defrost nothing works. i tryed watching the motor work and when i plug it in to watch to see if it moves when i switch settings it doesn't. When i plug it in it just trys to rotate completely one direct. If i dont have all gears in place the motor will just constantly run. Please someone help me?

from what i've heard the system defaults to defrost when you have a vacuum leak preventing the selector from working. did you remove a vacuum line?

where would that be? and no this is the only thing i remove.. i thought it was the resistor pack, and it was working before i removed this... thats why i am so stumped...

when i had this problem it happened to be a line leaking under the hood. but there are vacuum lines behind/under the glove box, mine were white and black and went to a canister. someone else will chime in that knows more

yeah i saw the white and black cable... but why the hell doesn't it randomly work, the only thing i did was take out that white box... the white box has a gear hooked up to something that like spins, seems like it would change where the air is coming out when u flip the switch... any ideas?

The same thing happened to my 99. I fixed it by trading it in on a new 07. The problem has not reoccurred.

"Resistor box" or blower motor resistor is under your hood in the hvac box to the lower right of the blower motor.

The box you have is the blend door actuator. It turns a door that that blends the air from the evaporator core (cold air) and the heater core (warm air) to give you the desired temperature.

The reason is goes to one side when turned on is because it is a servo style motor. It does this to know its movement range when first started up. The reason the motor keeps running when the gears are removed is because it has moved the rod to the desired position. This is a feed back system. When you turn the temperature **** it powers the motor until the actuator rod is in the current position (basing its readings off of a potentiometer.) When the rod gets to this position it cuts power to the motor.

oh okay so that has to do with the temperature not the to deetermine where air itself is coming out of. any idea why my fan selctors would jsut stop working though?

Check under the hood for lines going to a round black part. You probable have a line off there. On my 3.0 it was on the passenger side. That was a 2002.

ok so i got the fan control to work, back to my other issue, where the ---- is the resistor pack lol

the black orb, or ball, or what ever you want to call it, will have a crack or in the line but is far less common. the orb is attached to the inner fender on the passenger side.
