VSS? It's the grey wire in the GEM module behind the radio. I believe Grey with a Red/Maroon stripe.

Sadly, I have not technical data on '03 and up Rangers -- a situation I need to rectify! I have service manuals for everything from 1992 to 2002 though.

Recheck your wiring is all I can say. Question: what does the console do when the lights are off?

Mine does the same thing, Alon. The Explorer uses a completely different style of dimming module from the one in the Ranger. It is more a more sophisticated unit and I plan to get one for my Ranger to hopefully correct this.

Bob, what is the difference that would cause it to work like that? This is the first I've heard of this problem. What year explorer consoles are affected, if you have that info?

Don't know what year mine is but it's green, so 98~2001. The Explorer dimming unit is pulse width modulated but the Ranger looks like a variable resistor. I'm not sure how the electronics interact between the two, just that my 99 Explorer book shows the different diming module from anything in the Ranger books.

Well, on some explorers there are two illumination lines. One of them is red/black and I know on one console I had that setup and only the red/black wire worked for the illumination -- I think. I don't remember. It could be that one line supplies power, and the other line is "ground", but PWM modulated. If so, grounding the PWM line, and supplying power from the resistive dimmer to the other line would solve the problem. Did you end up with any "extra" wires on your setup?

Although, since the unit is electronic, it may not see the other line, and respond only to the dimmer line, don't know. I'm going to have to research it a bit, I guess.

I've installed some 98-2001 consoles and this problem hasn't cropped up. I'm real curious as to what there is about your units that are different and exactly what dates they are from. A PWM dimmer and resistive one should work the same -- but obviously SOMETHINGS up with this system.
