Ranger Danger (fuel issues)

My 1988 2.9L ranger has been running rough so I decided to start by replacing the fuel filter. The filter housing I found is inbetween the tank and the external fuel pump, I removed it and it was full of gas but had no filter. I put a can style filter inside it and reattached the lines. It ran fine for a min, then died and wont start. Now no fuel is getting to the throttle body, and no fuel is getting into the filter housing. I blew on the lines coming from the tank to the filter and they are clear and gas flows.

Dont know what to do from here.

Afterwards I found another filter (inline type) after the fuel pump, right under the starter. I plan to replace this later.

My questions are:
Is it standard to have 2 filters?
In my chilton manual I dont see a fuel pump inside the tank, is there only 1 fuel pump?
Suggestions?

UPDATE

Replaced inline fuel filter. Still not getting gas to throttle body. Fuel pump builds pressure but isnt moving fuel, only air. Can style filter housing is not filling with fuel.

I realize now that there is a low pressure fuel pump in the tank. Is there any way to test this pump to see if it is functioning? Ive looked online and see they are pretty pricy, I'd like to know if there's a way to test if its bad before I tear into the tank.

you only have one pump, and yes replace that filter. something between the pump and engine is clearly clogged

I left town for a week, came back and she started right up. Took it for a test drive and couldnt get above 45mph tops. Keeps boggin out like shes starvin for fuel. So I took off the bed and there is definitely a fuel pump in the tank (2 total). Its shot so I ordered a new one. Hopefully that solves the issue.
