Ranger Sounds Like A Diesel
 

It sounds like a diesel!!!

I recently purchased a 2001 Ford Ranger Edge 4.0L V6 4x4 w/ 133000miles on it. Gotta good deal on it (currently own 2000 Ford Ranger 4cyl). Now when I start it the truck sounds like a diesel up to about 2000RPM. The noise does seem to relate to the RPM's. Although the truck doesn't always make the noise. It doesn't effect the trucks performance at all. I don't think it has anything to do with the heat shields, exhaust, fan assembly, pulleys, belts, accessories, or valve tapping.

Someone mentioned possibly being associated with the Timing chain (a timing chain guide)? Is this possible, and if so do you really need to take out the motor or could you just disassemble the front end? If so, how does it rate on the difficulty scale and how much mula would I have to shell out?

I'd really appreciate any help... And if you help me I'll post a sick burnout once I get it fixed... Hopefull by this weekend...

the truck has a timing chain not a belt and that could be a source of the noise... im trying to visualize the noise you are hearing... where in delaware are you?

Is it possible the engine is pinging? I dont think that engine has a knock sensor or anything to retard the timing.. try running a tank of 93 octane and see if it sounds different.

It might be carboned up and full of crap...

you have to pull the motor to change the right side cassette and chain. this is probley where the noise is comming from. listen real close at the rear of the motor at the HVAC box.

BTW there are 4 timing chains in a 4.0 SOHC engine.

ford was replacing the primary chain tensioner,chain guide, jackshaft and crankshaft sprockets, with a improved chain tensioner kit under warranty.

kit # 2U3Z-6D256-CA for balance shaft engines (4x4)

it calls for about 8 hours of labor.

If the 4.0 is a sohc,more than likely it gonna be with the timing chains....this was a real common problem with the sohc......

You guys say that the timing chains are a usual problem with the 4.0 SOHC. So does this also mean it is an easy fix?

you have to remove the motor and take it apart. not an easy fix.

Well dropping valves is a usual problem on a Hemi but it doesn't make them an easy fix either... There was a reason someone sold you that truck.

Does the noise (pinging) happen when the engine is cold, when its warm, or both cold and warm???? If its just when the engine is warm, then IT IS NOT THE TIMING CHAIN....finale!!!

i know mine did this after i put my k&n filter in and it was the Mass air flow sencer that was filthy and the iac so i just took them appart and sprayed them down with special cleaner and put them back on. never happened again.

my old dodge dakota there was a spark plug that some how got cramed in so there was no gap in the plug lol so i regaped and ran fine.

idk abut the noise your hearing but just check around and listed close to the sounds

acording to the TSB from ford the noise can happen anytime the engine reaches 2000 RPM's and over, cold or hot.

and its not a pinging noise, its a ticking or a high pitch knocking noise.

I have the same noise (or similar) on my 94' 3.0L, sounds like mine is coming from the rear of the headers to the front of the cats somewhere. Mine disappears above idle, but get's quieter the hotter the engine gets (but doesn't completely disappear, anything similar???

my buddies hyundai sounded like a diesel... turns out one of the cylinders was shot. i believe.

he never changed oil for years.......idiot.
