Rear ABS Sensor (CLOSE THIS THREAD)

Just a quick question...

The rear ABS sensor is right over top of the rear differential plate and is the only thing bolted onto the rear axel isnt it?

It is the only sensor on the diff - right on top with a 2-wire plug.

That sensor is difficult to get to unless your truck is raised up in the air. Would you happen to know the tools it requires to remove the old abs sensor?

btw, i picked up the part for $10.. (ABS530780)

It is held in by a single bolt. I don't know the hex size offhand but I would guess something between 10mm and 13mm.

Well this did not fix the problem... Any suggestions?

INT3RC3PTOR 05-11-2006 10:08 PM

the light being on i take it..

well im taking my bulb out of my dash.. i replaced my dif with an non ranger LSD..so i lost the abs sensor plate(gear) so yea i know whats wrong and dont care to have the light on

Diabolic 05-11-2006 10:15 PM

The speedometor is still off which is also affecting my odometor reading, and not only is my abs light on, it is affecting my (duh) ABS. Which also makes clicking noises when the pedal is depressed.

INT3RC3PTOR 05-11-2006 10:20 PM

hmmm..you replaced the sensor already right?..well idk i guess, just has to be some other internal problem or check up at the master.

that sensor wont do anything to yer speedo so it looks like you got a couple of weird things going on

The ABS sensor is also the speed sensor for the speedometer on Rangers from 98 through 2000.

A common problem can be the connection from the interior wiring harness to the rear harness. It is a large 40-pin connector under the driver seat and is accessible from under the truck. Unscrew the center bolt, open it up and look for water or corroded terminals inside. Even if there is none, it is good preventative maintenance to pack this vulnerable connector with dielectric grease, available at Ford dealers and auto parts stores.

Would you say that this is the only other thing preventing it from working or could there be a couple other things?

V8 Level II 05-11-2006 10:42 PM

I'm not clear on the problem(s). You say that the speedometer is off. Does that mean that it consistantly reads low or high or does it mean that the needle jerks and/or operates erratically? Or is it something else?

Do you have RABS or 4WABS? The ABS light could be due to a failure in some other part of the ABS system that is not related to the speedometer. A Ford dealer has the reader for any ABS trouble codes.

Diabolic 05-11-2006 10:45 PM

Needle jerks and operates erratically. Not sure about RABS etc.

OK, the jerky needle and ABS light sounds like an ABS/VSS problem. Since that sensor has been replaced, it means that you're probably looking at water or corrosion in the connector below the seat. It is a common problem. Not the only possibility but, by far, the most likely.

Diabolic 05-11-2006 10:53 PM

Thanks Bob, i'll have to check that out tomorrow if it isnt raining.

Please post a complete description of the symptoms you have seen. What steps you have taken so far to correct it? Include as much detail as you can.
