Rear Brake question
 

So the other day im driving home and notice this horrendous grinding noise coming from the rear of the truck. The sound its making is like there are springs and pads that blew up in the drum. I took the drums off and found that the brake assemblies are still there and assembled. I had my son pump the brake to see if I could see anything. the pads push out normally but do not retract to a non breaking position. I replaced all the hardware and am still getting this noise !!!

I had the pads and rotors looked at and they still meet spec so i didnt replace them. My front brakes are a bit ****ty and have read that if the front are bad, they may have an effecet on the rear. Any truth to this??

If anyone can shed any light I would be most appreciative

dont know if it is or isnt your problem but if your fronts are not working properly it puts more strain on your rears if everything looks fine in your rears do your front brakes and see if it fixes it also pull your drum and check your axle shafts for play it could be a bearing problem

what is your truck(year,model,engin,trans,mileage ect.)

year, engine, drive-train

could be the rear end itself?

Its a 1996 2.3 litre with a manual tranny. Just out of curiousity, if it is the bearings or the rear end, how much of a pain is it to fix ???

Could also be a u-joint that's dried out.

Just a bit more information that may help out this diagnosis. When I put the wheels back on and rotated them, I did not hear the any griniding at all.

Interesting. are you extended or standard cab? if extended you may have the 2 piece driveshaft slip yoke clunk.
