Engine Start Button?

Hey everyone, I was searching through truckperformance.com & came across this. I was wondering if this push engine start button would work on our trucks?

Don't see why not. Just wire it into the ignition switch correctly.

Yep, will work fine on our trucks. I am not a fan because I don't see the point of putting a key in the ingition turning it..and then pushing the button. I would never just bypass the need for the key...
Some upscale cars (BMW's I think), can recognize your key's in your pocket so all you have to do is push a button to start it....So, that's pretty cool...

im my head would be kinda sweet to use one on a stick shift as the ground for the clutch. that way, you have the truck in neutral or gear, and instead of putting the clutch in to start, you can hold the button, and start the truck.

ean i dont think the BMW starter recognizes when your keys are in your pocket... i think you have a minute to push the button after you use your keys to unlock your car or you entered the code...

They actually do.....Least the 7-Series...and many other brands (Lexus,Cadillac)
When you have your keys in your pocket, basically you never need to actually use the key, or the buttons on the fob, you just have to have the fob with you (in pocket)....

I have a home-made rigged up push start button in my s-10. I have to figure out how to break out the wheel lock so I can throw the key away for good. I am going to switch it out for a momentary-on toggle switch. I like the nascar style toggle switch over the swank elegant bmw switch for this application since it's a drag racing truck.

Old topic, but.. Latemodel Restoration has one specifically for the '05+ mustang. I don't know if the wiring would be similar to the Ranger. Something to look into.

My dad has a 2006 750Li BMW and you have to put the key into the ignition BUT you dont turn it then you can it the start button. the only thing it recognizes in your pocket is to unlock itself when you are within a few feet.

the new vettes don't need the key either, as long as it's in your pocket the doors unlock when you get close. it doesn't even have a place for the key inside, just the start button.

Guys, the remote key fob thing is different that what I was talking about....I am talking about what RngMsrt is also talking about....

These new systems are not just the remote start feature (which I have had for years), where you need to put the key in and turn it before shifting into drive. These systems actually "see" your key in your possession (in pocket or something) and unlock your doors when you approach (or allow the engine to start with a button when inside the car) without you doing ANYTHING..basically taking the key fob technology to another level...by deleting the buttons on the key fob itself.

How does the Smart Entry / Smart Start system work?
This is how on a Prius (Each brand of car has a little different system):

Smart Entry and Smart Start allow you to unlock the doors and start the car without having to take the key fob out of your pocket. The Prius senses the fob in your pocket; just touch the inner surface of either front door handle (or press lightly on the rear hatch handle) to open a locked door, and just push the Power button on the dashboard to start the car.

If you have the SmartEntry Fob in your pocket and you walk away from the car while it is running, the car will beep at you a few times, and a yellow warning icon on the dash lights up: a picture of a key with an exclamation point over it. But the car keeps running. If the person with the fob stays away from the car, someone else can still get in and drive it since it is still running, but the warning light remains on (so remember to Power Off the car before leaving it).

While the car is running (in park) it will not let you lock the car doors by pressing the electric door lock button by the arm rest while the driver's door is open. It is also not possible to lock the car from the outside by pressing the button on the door handle if you don't have the fob on you. So if you leave the car running, it won't let you lock the driver's door and lock yourself out of a running car if you don't have the fob with you.

Well putting a button in is very easy.

i wouls sugest that you just go to an autoparts store and just get a push button.

So that way no one will know that it will start your truck.

A very good way to anti-theft your truck.

All you have to do is run a wire with a fusable link from your battery into your cab.

then if you look under your hood you will see the satrter sinlanoid(SPL?)

you will se a small wire(about 12-16 Ga wire or so) just run a wire from that into the cab.

then all you have to do is mount the button and hook up the wires.

It doesnt even matter witch way the wires ar hooked up as long as both of them are hooked up to the button.

the you just turn your key on and push the button and it will start right up.

It also workes good if your truck dies and you need to move it just put it in gear and push the button and move it with the starter.

Yeah, I know what your talking about but Im just saying that since I've already got the remote start I have no need for a button but a button would look pretty cool to impress people. They get in and you push a button and it fires up. I personally wouldn't put one on mine either cause whenI think of that I think of a beefy engine starting up with that button like a VROOOMMMM. Mines a 2.5L 4 banger, not gonna make those noises ha. If you do get it to work, do a write up and iM sure many people will do it.

I just don't see the need to add ANOTHER step in starting up your truck LOL. With any solution we would be able to add to our trucks (to keep the truck secure & without MAJOR brain damage), you would still need to insert a ket and turn it..THEN press a button..might as well just crank the key a little further...I don't see how pressing a button AFTER putting the key in would impress anyone.....But just my 2 cents....

Personally I think having to put the key in and turn and than push a button would also be cheesy, really cheesy. But if it can be done wiot no key, just the button that would be sick. A lot of things that come stock on other vehicles that people do to their rangers I give a lot of respect and support also. Some things that don't seem do able they do. If you can figure this out without using a key, let me know! Good luck.

Ok correction to what i said earlier. when i got up this morning i got the keys to the 750li and you can start it with the keys in your pocket BUT you have to have your foot on the brake and it has to be within like 20 seconds of unlocking it, so once again i was wrong lol

I have a push button on my BII. But I only put it on because my ignition switch messed up and I was too cheap to buy another one. It works out pretty good for wheelin though.

No biggie....everyone screws up everyonce and awhile man!! All of the start features will require you to have your foot on the brake...it's a safety feature...
