Probably shouldn't have done this, but what's done is done. I have a '97 Ranger Super Cab, 4.0L V6. I bought it used a year ago and didn't realize until after I bought it that the turn signals would only work when the tilt steering was all the way up. Well, up until a couple of weeks ago that worked. But lately, you could start to hear it buzzing in the steering column when I tried to use the turn signals.

So, I opened up the steering column to see if I could see an actual issue. Well, someone (one of the previous owners, I assume) had been in their messing around before because on the wiring connector, both latching tabs that hold the wiring connector to the multifunction switch are broken off. Compounding the issue, of the four wires on the connector, 3 of them won't lock into the connector. Right now I have the following wires and locations; Top right (as you're looking at the connector) - Lt Green w/ white stripe; Middle right - White with red stripe; Bottom right - Lt Blue; 2nd row from right on the bottom (next to Lt Blue wire) - White w/ Lt Blue stripe.

The white w/ light blue striped wire is the only one that is locked into the connector. I'm not sure if the other three are in the right location because now, when I plug the connector into the switch, the right turn signal comes on (without the turn signal switch moved) and won't go off.

I need some desperate help here folks. I'm assuming I need to put a new connector on but do these wires just lock into it? The wires have these square leads on them. Do I need a new multifunction switch?

 

Common problem…
I can’t help with your wiring, sorry, but I had a similar problem in my ’98; I used tie wraps to hold everything together.
Also had a wire connector slipping in and out when I tilted the steering wheel up and down, directionals too, worked up but not down; I laid the wire over to one side and tie wrapped it in place.

This fix not only worked, it still working five years later.
The truck is the ’98 I have for sale with 200k miles.

Take a look and see if tie wraps can’t be employed to hold the connector/wires in place.
