RIP 5R55E - 04/01/99 - 07/25/09

Trans let go in the Ranger on Saturday.

I've been expecting it. It started going down hill in Pismo back in June when I couldn't get any power down and the truck wouldn't even move the tires in 4hi if I was on a slight incline. Then at Tuff Trucks we just couldn't get any power down at all, worse than normal. Drove it to Cleghorn (local trail) two weeks ago and the trans was banging and slipping in the 1-2 and occasionally 2-3 shifts. Pulled it out Saturday to drive while my F1 was in the shop and it felt like it was starting in second. Then it started slipping real bad between shifts and slammed into 3rd hard. By this time I was on the freeway, the O.D. light of doom came on (flashing OD) and it wouldn't shift into 5th. I pulled off the freeway and only had 3rd and 4th gear. Limped it the 5 miles home that way and parked it.

It was due. It was 10 years old with 145,000 miles on it. And I in now way treated it well the past few years.

So now for the fun time of finding a new trans and getting it swapped in.

Atleast you get to rebuild your tranny or find a new one and hopefully never have to worry about it again, put a shift kit in it while your at it.

Not quite. The 5r55r has stronger internals and way more precise shifts. It will also hold 500 hp. I've seen it myself.

I'll do some checking and get back to you. There is an explanation on one of the mustang sites I'm on.

I would just rebuild what is the truck with stronger internals. Less crap to deal with since once its back together it will just dolt right in. No computer mods or driveline mods.

Different transmission isn't an option right now. It's getting another 5R55E, in the cheapest manner I can manage.

There are bigger plans for the future, none of which involve a 5R55E, so there is no sense in dumping a whole lot of money into one now when it's just going to come out again in 5,000 miles.

Couple more... next year some time maybe...

The plan was always wait until this engine or trans took a dump then make the switch. But the trans went too soon... bad timing as always... oh well...
