I have an Autopage security system with remote start, you have to buy a PATS bypass module for the remote start to work

You own a 98, PATS is equipped from the factory.

How do you start your truck without a chip in the key?

I had a copy made at Home Depot and they can't make keys with chips in them. I had them check it and make copies and they both work just fine.

That's weird, the previous owner must have bypassed his PATS system in some way.

In that case, any remote start system should work fine

Yeah that's what I think, the key I have isn't factory anyways so IDK what they did to it. I'll check under the dash later.

lol it happens, so many acronyms and so many years to remember.

But on point I put a remote start on my 98 and I love it. I used the valiant one from jc whitney. Works up to 1000ft (i tested it and it worked up to 950ft clear line of sight).

EDIT: this one to be exact

Autopage has different models for the range you want. I got the low range which was a quarter mile. I almost upgraded to the one that lets you use your smartphone to monitor your vehicle, but I didn't have a smartphone at the time

http://www.c3autopageusa.com/

I just got off the phone with one of the dealers and early next year they are coming out with an app, the current system backdoors it through their website, the new module will be directly from your phone's app

I read the link I used wrong. 99 was when it started for Rangers

The link I read was "by 2000 Ford vehicles all had PATS"

Basically I had one just like that on my older truck and I never had a problem it, the quarter mile range is perfect.

Yeah this is pre PATS so any should do. I'm going with that one because it's $50 off amazon. The ones with the smartphones are hella cool but they're still updating them and they are costly along with you have to pay a fee each time to continue the service.

My main concerns are will this be a lot like stock which I like meaning when I unlock the vehicle using the new remote will the interior lights come on. Not sure if I need a relay of if the stock controls plug into this unit which I highly doubt.

I've never really installed a remote start on a newer car. I've have little experience with new equipment and vehicles so I'm treating this like it will be a first time for me so I'm giving myself a day to install it. This takes me back to when I was a kid installing my first stereo in my Honda.. ahhh the good old days...
