Scan tool kills battery in minutes

I have an ELM327 wireless scan tool. The device plugs into the OBDII port and connects wirelessly to my Ipad or Iphone running the diagnositic software. Twice now, in the last two days, plugging the tool into the port has killed the battery in a manner of minutes. After having it plugged in for five minutes, at most, the battery is so low it won't start the truck. Charging the battery back up fixes the problem.

Has anyone run into this? First time for me and I baffled.
