rear drum size on 99 mazda 2.5 w 3.73's

went to autozone to get rear brake shoes and it shows 2 sizes ... they said i need to measure it and im not sure quite what to measure so that i get the right size ... the truck came with 15" wheels if that helps so maybe its the bigger size?

If the drum has little like bump things all the way around the front edge of it then its the smaller size (9" I think?). If the drum is flat all around than its the bigger size (10" I think)

you've got 9" drums seeing that you've got a 4cyl and 2wd. It's a 7.5", but while you're in there working, if it were me, I'd find a JY axle and rip the 10" drums off it and upgrade! it's a bolt-on swap, you've just gotta pull the axle shafts to get the backing plate on and off. It's a popular upgrade on the older trucks like gen1/2's and is a helpful addition to braking power.

x2 @ what Korey said.

sounds good cause the truck dont stop that good .... driving my grandpa's 95 around today with abs was a world of difference. I snapped some pics of it which i plan to put up momentarily. A friend of my dads has more tools than i do and offered to help me with the brakes and leafs if i bring over a couple 30's of coors. I was over there last week helping lift my dads jeep and installing a chain controller for the clutch.

not abnormal... the way drum brakes are designed, they don't hold well when turning backwards, but forwards they push the shoes farther into the drum... often the manufacture's instructions to adjusting them is to pull the handle (hand brake) up 3 clicks, and adjust untill it turns backwards, but not forwards

drive in reverse, and hit your brakes a few times, this should adjust your shoes out
