Speedometer doesnt work. PLEASE HELP

Hello, I have a 1999 Ranger 3.0 2wd. THe speedometer stopped working and I was told it was a speed sensor. I read the posts and all, and I removed the sensor on the differential, but it is different from the sensor they gave me. Is there another sensor or did I get the wrong part? Please help I am trying to fix it today. THanks

do you have a picture of the two?
There are a couple of different LOOKING VSS. Some are interchangable.
But if the connector doesnt fit then you may have to get a new one.

POST A PIC.

The sensor they sold you is not for a 99 Ranger.

On 98~2000 Rangers, the rear axle ABS sensor does double duty as the vehicle speed sensor. Just ask for the rear diff ABS sensor.

The abs fuse could be blown also. This will set a check engine light after about a day and also your odometer would stop too. We found this out when I pulled my ABS fuse in Wharton and towards the end of the day the speedo and odo quit and check engine came on.

the one you got gos into the trans via the spedo cabe. That one is driven by a gear then turns a magnet in that sensor to send the signal then the cable goes on to the old speedos wich are affected by a larger magnet and turns the needle.
The new ones are Hall-efect (sp?) sensors.. tht are actiated by a ring that is bolted to the ring gear.
{sorry got toointo it.}

1) Is everything else in the cluster inoperative or is it just the speedometer/odometer?

2) Open the large 40-pin connector accessible from under the truck directly below the driver seat. Check it for water or corroded pins.

It is just the speedometer and the odometer. I will check the 40 pin plug tomorrow. Besides that is there anything else you can think of?

For 99, the raw VSS signal goes from the ABS sensor to either the GEM or the 4WABS Module, depending on whether you have RABS or 4WABS. From there, a conditioned square wave signal goes to the speedo, PCM, speed control, etc. That only leaves a few possibilities:

Bad ABS sensor (common);
Bad speedometer (possible);
Bad GEM/4WABS Module (not likely);
Opens or grounds in the wiring or connectors.

I suggested looking at the 40-pin because it is a known trouble spot and easy to check.

I checked the connecter under the drivers seat and still nothing. It was two different plugs right next to each other was that it? I also checked the whole wiring harness and no rips or anything. Any other Ideas? Is there another speed sensor on there somewhere else? Like possible the one I bought first, can that go somewhere? Thanks.

The only VSS on a 99 is the one on the rear diff.

Do you have an ABS light on? Did you check the fuse (#14) for the ABS as Luke suggested above?

These are the possibilities:
  • Bad ABS sensor;
  • Bad speedometer;
  • Bad GEM/4WABS Module;
  • Loss of power/ground to the Speedometer or GEM/4WABS Module;
  • Opens or grounds in the wiring or connectors that connect the above. There are two wires from the diff ABS sensor to the GEM or 4WABS Module. There is a single wire from there to the speedometer.
There isn't anything else.
