starter location on 04 4X4 V6 4.0

hey everybody. I'm looking on replacing the starter for my ranger soon before it gets colder. I've think I've located it underneath close to the oil pan on the driver side. I just haven't had time to out it on jacks and get under it with a droplight to get a closer look. I tried to look online for the location but couldn't find anything for 04. I know this may be a dumb question, but I'm just starting to learn the basics. thanks!

where you're describing is the correct location of the starter.

awesome! Thanks man. Would you also know what other year rangers have it in the same location so I can look up a video on YouTube or pictures on Google just so I have a better idea before I start?

I'd assume any 4.0L SOHC would be in the same location but i could be wrong.

the 4.0 SOHC began in 2001 on the ranger

look in the general direction my finger is pointing on the drivers side. My truck is also lifted so its easier to see

and here it is. be careful not to let it drop/hang by the wires, it could tear the wire/terminal on the wire.

I know I may sound like an idiot when I ask this, but wheres the front and back of the truck just as a reference.

front is towards the left and rear is towards the right in the picture.

if you look behind the right side of the drivers side upper control arm which is shown in the picture, the starter will be right there a little below.

gotcha. thank you again man!

99offroadrngr 11-22-2013 08:48 PM

Doubt you'll need this since its easy to replace but here it is anyway. Out of the 2004 ranger Ford workshop manual i have

Another reference picture....

Transmission removed, looking at the back of the engine, left side of pic is driver's side looking forward. You can see the starter removed and resting on the front axle housing. The rounded hole just to the right of the resting starter is where the starter pokes through to mesh with the flywheel.

You DO NOT need to do all this to remove the starter!! I was doing a clutch and transmission swap. lol.
